Yep, that's the one I remember - fantastic movie. I think you're right, the tie and suit look the same, the photo is probably a publicity still for the film. I think I see a bow or pugaree attachment on the wrong side of the hat, which is what made me think he's wearing his lid backwards.
PS...
Louis looks to be wearing a snap-brim hat backwards in that photo. I seem to remember seeing him wear a hat backwards in another photo (or maybe I am misremembering this one). Here's the photo linked to directly:
As I recall, Bencraft is the largest vendor of Borsalino in the US, fueled largely by their religious garb business. The religious lids are generally pretty distinctive - tall crowns, often worn high on the head, extra wide brims, like these...
I don't think the Sydney is soft - the brim made an audible 'pop' when it was snapped, and the pinches in the crown would spring right out. It was definitely too springy. I guess you could say it was soft in that you could make the dent easily, but the dents wouldn't stay. Adding spray stiffener...
I found the Sydney to be irritating to deal with. It would only take a shallow crease, and it popped out at the merest provocation. I don't think it was that the felt was soft, but rather too springy. The Sydney was not as soft as a Sovereign grade Stetson. Apparently it holds a crease much...
Actually, my wife and I both thought it looked good, in a 1960s, racing-trilby sort of way. I thought it matched the style of the suit too. He couldn't really have much more brim without obscuring the lighting and the camera angle - I wonder if he and Al have to persuade their director to let...
Yep, M.V. has it right. These crown blocks are just for the crown itself. The brim is formed with a flange, a separate piece.
There are obviously multiples of the shapes in the picture, no doubt for different size crowns.
PS I never really bought that there was a difference between a teardrop...
I saw the show this morning - Matt looked great, and even sported a bit of a Hollywood swoop on the right side of the lid. I think the flash of color on the bow was a vertical Borsalino logo, rather than a colored bit of ribbon as Art does, but I can't be sure, of course. I immediately thought...
Thanks for the pics - so it's Royal quality. I have an Ashland with the brown sweat, and strangely enough it seems more comfortable that my Ashland with a black sweat, which I find hard to believe. I like the edge stitching detail a lot, it's nice to find a unique design attribute in a modern...
Looks pretty nice. I have a Chatham in sage which is sort of a medium olive - looks sage in full daylight, dark green or gray in the dark. It seems to be a different color than the Packard.
Is it Sovereign felt? If so, the sweatband should say "The Sovereign" and the lining is usually dark. If...
I'll give a standard FL suggestion - order the Packard in one color and get set to wait. To ease your pain, also order the Stylemaster in a different color as long as it is in stock. This way you'll get to make the comparison yourself, plus we'll get a review of the Packard when you get it. It's...
Maybe you could beat up a Stetson Dune and get the desired effect. At the least the ribbon looks right and the brim is quite wide (3 by 3-1/4 dimensional). You could coerce the teardrop into a telescope without too much trouble, I reckon.
A Camp Draft might do the trick, although with less brim.
Well, I'm the same height, definitely not the same weight. I've owned a Sydney and a Stylemaster and sold them both, as the brim looked too big on me. I would worry that you might look like an umbrella in one of those hats. I suggest a 2" to 2-1/4" brim. I have two Stetson Ashlands, with a...
I think the Packard is a new model. The stitching sounds like a nice touch, it was more common on vintage lids, you don't see it much in modern hats. I only found the hat at Delmonico, which doesn't list the felt quality. Is that where you got the pic? Based on the price, it's probably Sovereign...
Hey, this question is right in my wheelhouse - I love a Stetson teardrop. I did a review of the Stetson Brewster a while back, and compared it directly to an Akubra Stylemaster in acorn fawn. Here are the comparison pictures (click for full size):
In them, you can see that the Stetson...
The Roadmaster and Roadster are definitely different hats. The Roadmaster, which is basically an OR in natural (not silverbelly) with much less stiffener has been discontinued. The factory bash for the Roadmaster was the standard western OR bash.
The Roadster looks like a Stetson profile 10...
The Stetson Bear Creek is a nice option, the thin leather band is outdoorsy, and it's a Sovereign lid so should hold up well. It only comes in tawny.
It's on sale right now at Noggintops: http://www.noggintops.com/page.cfm?p=52
