I'll reiterate my suggestion for a Jaxon Bogart fur felt, $88 at Village Hat Shop. Many FL members have had good experience with this hat, both in looks and durability (and it comes with a free hat brush!):

Every report about Akubra that I've read states that they should be bought a half size too large, as the sweatband will draw in naturally over time (from sweat and weather), about a half size. I wouldn't do anything irreversible to your lid for a couple of months at least.
We appear to have been speaking at cross purposes. I don't object to western hats on any level, nor do I object to your characterization of the OR and the CD as western hats. I objected to your categorical statement that they are and always will be western hats, not fedoras, which I think has...
I understand your argument, but I'm not buying it. There's no physical attribute that makes the Camp Draft a western hat (other than the fact that you know its history, so like to think of it that way). You do the hat no service by pigeon-holing it as western, and in fact, you appear to have...
I have to disagree with monbla256. There's no reason to say the Camp Draft is not a 'true fedora'. It's an open-crown, formable felt hat with a bound brim and a thin ribbon - that makes it a fedora, regardless of the history of the OR as a western hat.
Well, here's the big FL thread on the Nostalgia, there's lots of pics in here:

Or go to images.google.com and type in Stetson Nostalgia, this will give a few pics.
The Stetson Nostalgia may be worth a look, it's available from many vendors:

It's an open crown lid that you bash to your own liking, with a really wide ribbon.
The price is right, anyway....
(I see the E-train beat me to the...
A few suggestions for classically-shaped teardrop lids with moderate brim and crown dimensions, good for easing into hat wearing:

I was just looking at the website - I may have to look them up when they come to NYC in November. Their "Copy Cat" service sounds very good, for those who have at least one really well-fitted suit but can't make it to a big city for a fitting.
Well, I suppose you could just close your head in the window long ways and cross ways and measure the resulting distances, but it would require a gentle touch. That's assuming you don't own a set of phrenologist's calipers.
I found this listing of the different types of ovals at...
Fair enough about the newly purchased Stetson with a powdery problem. Was it newly manufactured or old stock? We don't know. But let's say it was newly produced and Stetson sold a batch of hats made from blotchy blanks, and in this case you are correct. OK, that's one anecdote. To me it seemed...
Well, very expensive silk clothing usually carries a disclaimer about color variations. Wool takes dye better than silk, so no disclaimers are needed. Car paint is obviously a monolithic overcoating, as opposed to a dying process, so the comparison of a hat to a car finish is a little silly...
Actually, English hat size is a measurement in inches. It is the circumference of your head divided by Pi, and so is effectively the mean diameter of your head in inches. So the inch symbol is correct, strictly speaking, but is traditionally omitted.
Metric hat size is a more direct...
The Stylemaster and Camp Draft are good suggestions and come big enough. You might want to opt for the SM first, as it is more modest in its proportions for a starter lid, and it comes already creased. The CD is an open crown lid, which is not a big deal, but you do have to crease it yourself...
