Examples of Casual Fedoras

While I have read many posts about the Akubra Campdraft and the Stetson Open Road I was hoping that there were other options (and pictures) of a casual fur felt fedora that can withstand the elements.

My favorite casual yet tough fedora is the Akubra Federation. I've owned three of them and have worn them in all manner of weather [except snow... I live in Florida], they simply look better the more you subject them to.

Here I am in my Deluxe version on a Gulf Coast beach this past spring. Just after this, it blew completely off my head and went a good way down the beach. [Note that isn't staged... I barely caught it before blowing off here.]

Akubras are hearty hats made for taking the elements of the Australian Outback. I can't recommend them enough for someone wanting a tough weather handling hat of most any persuasion.

I own 4 (one for over 30 years) and they are trully a "....fan the fire, water the dog" do anything hat. They have at least 4 styles that would be termed a "....casual Fedoras" and with their one price shipping and the almost equal parity in the current exchange rate US/AUSTRALIA $s probably a better deal now. Their probably one of the BEST deals now available and ALL of their Fur Felt hats are just that ALL fur, NOT a mix of wool/fur !!

Marshack, I believe you'll eventually find that most fedoras that have a thin ribbon, with the exception of extremely nice felts (such as Borsalinos) or dramatic ribbon effects (see Art Fawcett Hall of Fame), will lend more than enough informality to suit your casual needs.

The best compromise I could find (in my affordable range) was the Akubra Campdraft, which you may be tired of hearing about. The thin ribbon lends an air of informality, the colors go with just about anything, and the brim is wide enough to provide ample protection.

I don't know what you're looking for beyond causal-ness(word?), so I'll leave you with this: look for durability first, ribbon width second, and felt "hand" and color third.

I think that just about any fedora can be casual. Most here will point at Akubras for durability, but most vintage hats will stand up pretty well, depending on their previous life.

Here is my Akubra Squatter, it has a practical, casual sensibility due to the 3 inch brim, but it still looks sharp.

I definitely think the Akubra Stylemaster can be a good casual hat too. I've worn mine with anything from dress slacks to jeans and a sweater.

The Stetson Bear Creek is a nice option, the thin leather band is outdoorsy, and it's a Sovereign lid so should hold up well. It only comes in tawny.

I like a fedora with an inch and a half wide ribbon. Formal or not, thats what I wear with everything, a la the pictures Yeps posted.
