Wow, JJ really charges a premium - a couple of weeks ago a friend picked up an Alessandria from Bencraft in taupe for $230 - a nice lid.
So, Metropd, what did you end up doing?
I dropped two hats for some refurb work at Worth & Worth in NYC on Saturday.
One is getting a new ribbon and brim binding for $45
The other is getting stretched two sizes, a new sweatband and a reblock to open crown for $55.
A friend dropped a hat for a clean, block, stretch one size, new sweat...
I've noticed in the last few years that much of the nylon used in outerwear no longer has an artificial feel - I have nylon hiking pants that feel like soft cotton canvas, for example. I imagine Tilley uses similar high-quality material in their hats. In your position, I would contact...
Nice purchase, fits the intended use well. We have something similar, but the dang thing is full of china, go figure ;)
I recommend hat rests, to keep the brims from flattening out on the shelves. Too bad the only kind available are those annoying plastic things, which are barely large enough...
I hear ya, the winter Tilleys are nice - almost make me want one. But what's up with this Oslo 1?

Is this a ladies hat or what?
As others have, they're different, it's just that David Morgan has put a teardrop in their open crown Sydney that's depicted. I think it looks a little better than the factory-crease in the Stylemaster, which looked too narrow to me.
I presume you know David Morgan has the Sydney in Regency Fawn - is Tawny Fawn extremely different?

Bill - point taken re: the bows, and it's valuable info. I like the look of his hats quite a bit, and the fact that other models shown have 'standard' bows makes it a side issue. The fact that these are made-to-measure for the price of stock is very impressive. I am also a solid 7-3/4 regular...
It sounds like the fur has a slight satin finish to it (i.e. the fur is a little long). It's normal for a satin finish hat to have a circular swirl at the top, from normal brushing. Is it so shiny that it looks bad? I have a dark gray satin finish hat that is shiny, but that's why I bought it -...
Nice looking lid - interesting it says 'Royalten Quality' on the lining but 'Royaltan' on the sweatband. Typo?
Love that lining and the 'Controlled Brim' logo.
Bill - does he use a conformer for fitting, or is this more of a made-to-measure situation, e.g. give him your size and style choices and he makes it?
I agree with bolthead and others that some of the bows look a little 'bulgy', but not all.
Tomasso, I agree, those are good suggestions, but you and I both know what we're looking for in a suit. I suggested Syms because the OP is just starting out and looking for a casual suit. He could feasibly pick up a first suit at Syms for $119-$199 and get used to wearing it, decide how the cut...
Artemis - I suggest you take a trip to the Syms in lower Manhattan, just south of the WTC. I'm also a New Yorker, I've been wearing suits for a long time, and have bought at least ten from Syms. Granted, I know exactly what I'm looking for, but for a general selection they're great. Let one of...
A double-glazed window insulates because the air within is prevented from mingling with either the interior or exterior air. The heat transfer therefore happens through 3 layers, glass-air-glass. If the outer or inner glass were porous like fabric, it would not insulate as well, as the escaping...
Gentlemen, I draw your attention to the listing for 'forum' in the Oxford English Dictionary, which clearly states that the word 'forum' has two separate plural forms, to whit:
"The plural of forum is usually spelled forums; the plural fora (as in the original Latin) is chiefly used when...
