    From what I can see from my coats, maybe there isn't a US Navy button regulation. Hope my two cents helped you. 1949 is almost regarded as the Holy Grail of peacoats. It's an exceptional year.which usually has thick soft Kersey Wool. I'm pretty sure the thread on my coats is cotton.

    The Melton coats also have a label which is hidden inside a pocket on the right side of the coat. . It opens vertically and is under the top third button. The contract number, manufacturer, and date of manufacture are on it. My two Meltons are 2002, and 1995.
