    Vintage neon signs

Sounds quite unusual today, but from what I understand it was a very popular moniker for food establishments and food products back in the 30s and 40s.

Here's a shot I took Christmas night of the Sanitary Diner in downtown Indianapolis. For more photos on the place, including interior shots, see my recent post in the Vintage Roadside thread.

    Vintage roadside

My girlfriend and I went driving around downtown Indianapolis Christmas night and again stopped by the Sanitary Diner to take some night shots of the signage. For those who didn't see my previous post, it's a Golden-Age classic built in 1934 and originally located in New Jersey. It was fully...

So trivial, yet it really ticks you off.

People really have the audacity to do this? Amazing. Asking you to stop a motion picture for a theater full of moviegoers so they, one person, can go relieve themselves without missing anything? How self-entitled we have become as a society.

Looking to Buy My First Suit :)

Honestly, if I had a $1000 budget for a suit, there's no way it would be anything but bespoke. The only problem might be your time frame, as bespoke suits can take several months depending on the backlog of the maker. If a bespoke suit was out of the question, then I'd look to Goodwill or other...

    Vintage roadside

Went back and thoroughly checked out Fountain Square in Indy this week. The place is a virtual time capsule, with plenty of vintage neon, diners and soda fountains, cocktail lounge, 24 hour grill, a classic barber shop, a tattoo shop, a performance hall with weekly swing dancing, and a fully...

    The Maltese Falcon

Back to the subject of The Maltese Falcon, I just learned that AMC theaters are going to be having a special showing of the film during the week of Feb 21. I for one cannot miss this opportunity to see such a classic as it was intended, projected onto the big screen. If you have an AMC theater...

A possible exception to hat etiquette?

In today's casual society, I'm not sure that many people would pay attention to hat etiquette, or even be aware that there was such a thing. That said, being that you are yourself aware of hat etiquette, you must do what your own conscious dictates.

What was the last TV show you watched?

Since moving to Indianapolis, I've been watching a lot of AntTV (Antenna TV), which features classic syndicated programming (mostly Network TV sitcoms) from the '50s through the '80s and '90s. Good stuff, and best of all, it's free.

Went out on another vintage diner run on Sunday, this time to The Oasis Diner in Plainfield, IN. A 1954 Mountain View diner, The Oasis Diner was also known as the U.S. 40 Diner and simply The Diner, located in Indianapolis. It closed in 2009 due to structural problems and health code...

Questions About the United States Navy Peacoat

I wore my father's Navy pea coat from WWII (he was a Seabee in the Pacific theater '44-'45) all through high school. Definitely heavier than any of the several later versions I've owned over the years, some military issue, some not.

    Vintage roadside

Just saw a term applied to (mostly) roadside attractions built to look like something else, such as buildings made to look like boats, teepees, hot dogs, ice cream cones, etc. The term is Mimetic Architecture. Makes sense to me.

Some additional information on the above diner that's now a Subway: It was originally called the Meadowbrook Diner, and much or it's history can be found here: http://historicindianapolis.com/indianapolis-then-and-now-meadowbrook-diner-5151-e-38th-street/

Vintage Picking and Road Tripping with Dinerman

My big questions is where do you find "deals" on such great vintage clothing, especially seemingly so much at once. I go to thrift and junk stores just about everywhere I travel, and it's very rare I find anything older than the 60s or 70s, and even when I do, they always want a mint for it.

While not Golden Era, like the two diners above, I did have lunch at another pretty cool diner yesterday: The Steer-In. Featured on Food Network's Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, it's been a local Indy institution since 1960. I had their famous Hoosier Tenderloin Sandwich.

    Vintage roadside

Went out driving around the city (Indy) yesterday, enjoying my day off, and tracked down several old Diners in the area. I'll start out with this one which must have been magnificent in it's day, but is now diminished to a (gasp) Subway. Admittedly it's the coolest Subway I've ever seen, but a...
