Most hearty and humble apologies to all FL geezers I may have unwittingly offended... It isn't that I don't think madras shirts worn under high-waisted linen pants hitched up to breast-bone level isn't a killer look - I just don't think I can pull it off:D
I have a piece of original madras...
Nor have I! Jeans are ultimately just workwear, and that's how I treat them. I'm much more interested in keeping them intact as long as possible than in whiskers and all that stuff. Denimology is fascinating as a spectator sport but I wouldn't want to be sucked in - any deeper, that is.
Sun's out, and I have a nostalgic yearning for... a short-sleeved shirt in Madras cotton. I'm thinking 40s or 50s style, very simple.
This is exactly what I want:

...but check those shoulder widths. It's not going to happen...
The Hells Angels Manhattan chapter were my next door neighbours for a while. Certainly some interesting denim patina on show (among other things)...
"I say, old chap - do you keep your jeans in the freezer?" I never asked, but what a missed opportunity for denimology.
Plus I'd add that the tumble dryer is more dangerous than the washing machine. Wash on gentle, take them out, fold them lengthwise, smooth out the creases, put back and spin, hang to dry.
Or you could keep 'em in the freezer between wears to keep the funk under control. Ya know, call me old...
I don't know the 1966s, but my last pair of LVC selvedge Levis (they were a sample from just before they started doing the selvedge reissues) is still going strong after 9 years - worn regularly, washed regularly. Just starting to wear through in a couple of places. A pair of Sugar Cane...
You can find repro M-421A jackets quite easily - they're a cloth flying jacket as used by the USN/Marine pilots in the Pacific, and can have squadron patches added, just like an A2, while still being authentic. Plus they're meant for a tropical climate...
As worn by the pilot at top right...
That Aero horsehide is like armour plating when it's new. Seriously, it looks good on you. I'd recommend giving it some serious wear-in time before you decide to ditch it. Check the thread in 'Outerwear' for water treatments - and a hot water treatment might even shrink it to where you want it...
Ah, yes - here's the one I was thinking of: http://www.thefedoralounge.com/showthread.php?t=47928&highlight=brooks
The ribbon's not quite right (too wide), and for the authentic English look you'd want to straighten the brim at the front almost all the way, but it's the general idea.
Bond's original hat was a trilby from Lock & Co - the Sandown: http://www.jamesbondlifestyle.com/index_clothing.php?m=cl&g=cl038. Nice hat - very nice hat indeed - but very pricey. What you want is a classic English racing felt like the Christys Epsom or Wincanton, which you can find on Ebay for...
For anyone who likes big, bold retro styling, we've had these on Ebay:

They used to hang in our Vermont restaurant and then in our kitchen. Transatlantic move to (very) tight quarters forces sale...
I'm looking for a USN flight jacket of the older variety. If it's original, it should be pre-1960s but I'd consider a repro as well. Doesn't have to be in amazing shape, as my budget isn't!
Anything out there?
John, it doesn't look particularly big except on the arms, where the cuffs are swallowed by the goatskin. The problem for me was that there was way too much spare leather across the front, particularly around the neck, which made the collar hang wrong and rucked up the leather inside...
