Sure can be a tedious process (one that can sometimes make a hat feel more your own) but if the leather really is still tough, it's possible to re-sew it through the original holes.
Problem is that those toppers are such stiff cans. I have one with no ribbon and will need to rectify that but...
Here's a fancy one. The hat sitting on it (the one which came in it when I made the purchase) is not the 'Privateer' but I was lucky enough to get that actual model later to complete the set. :)
Not an expert on age of these but the label has that mid-century feel alright. The grain is beautiful and remember, black is always really dark red or dark blue or dark brown - so dark it appears black. The Fonz's jacket was actually a dark brown. "Heyyyyyyyy". :)
