Shrinkage
I have a Christy's Trilby purchased new in 1987. It's shrunk about 1-1.5 sizes over the years, based on measuring the inside circumference, to the point that I can't wear it anymore. I wore it pretty regularly for maybe 10 years and was pretty tough on it - it's been soaked many, many...
I think you should definitely ask for the difference in price - they have a 'we will not be undersold' page - surely they will not be undersold by themselves?

One suggestion
I just ran across this yesterday - Worth & Worth in NYC can do under/over welts, brim binding, ribbons, whatever.

I've never had work done, but am going by there with my wife to pick out a hat for her birthday on Monday. I've been...
Oops
I checked to see if I actually did coin a new term - upon doing a search I find that it was coined by Mr. Burns on the Simpsons:
http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=numbskullery
Oh well, too bad for me, but I think this term still warrants more regular usage as...
For a while, I worked for a company with offices in the South Bronx, around the corner from a police precinct. I was called officer a lot in the local bodega and restaurants. It was definitely more common when I wore my black stingy brim Stetson --- nobody called me detective, but I did (and...
Local angle
Speaking locally, Bencraft has a couple of locations, one on the border of the Orthodox Jewish part of Williamsburg Brooklyn. They do a large business in supplying their hats - when I was there trying on fedoras last winter, every person who came in the store was Orthodox of some...
I agree with the advice above about matching something in your outfit. I had the opposite problem - I found a great brown raincoat on sale last winter, and used that as an excuse to buy a brown hat.
A little OT, but...
I haven't seen a Pisa, nor any of the wool/fur blend hats in person. But I own a Stetson Ashland which is similar in dimensions, is all fur felt in Royal quality. The main difference is that it has a slightly larger brim (2-1/4 vs. 2) and a teardrop crown. The ribbon is the...
Buyer beware
Now, now, numbers are your friends - I tell my students that all the time. Besides, I have a hat with a size tag in it that I got 22 yrs ago - it's shrunk two full sizes since then, so a size tag doesn't necessarily guarantee a good fit.
Nice color
I like that light gray color quite a bit, and the hat overall looks good on you. That wrinkle on the brim binding looks like it was left from the little foot of the sewing machine that stitched it on - you could maybe massage the wrinkle with your fingertips to smooth it out. Bummer...
More numbskullery - it's terrible when the retort is right at your fingertips waiting to be used and yet it's clear that discretion is the better part of valor - sometimes taking the high road is just a lot of work...
Engineering, believe it or not. He wears a Kangol lightweight wool fedora. Another engineering prof wears an outback style, also wool, and one math prof wears a deerstalker he picked up in Scotland a few years back - he carries it off quite well. Several of the younger faculty were asking about...
I'd like to coin a new word for this: 'numbskullery'
Unusual to see it in an older person, but maybe that's just because I mostly observe it in my students.
Today I wore a brown raincoat and a chocolate brown Stetson Ashland to our faculty meeting. My boss told me I looked like I stepped out of a Raymond Chandler novel, so I answered "mission accomplished".
Big hats - new
That's a dilemma, it can be tough to track down big hats. Vintage is pretty much out of the question unless the hat-gods are smiling upon you. Here's a couple of leads for finding a new hat.
Delmonico Hatters has a section for the cranially enhanced...
Suggestion
I like the looks of the Stetson Bear Creek - a Sovereign quality c-crown fedora with color and band that would look good with casual wear. I believe it's the same shape and dimensions as the Chatham (it's on sale until Dec 26 use coupon code '$AVE12' for $20 off)...
Hi Hatco - what are the chances of getting a new, but open-crowned Stetson OR without too much stiffener? I appear to be developing a hankering for a real engineer's lid. Cheers, Carl
Yeah, that's a weird rectangular bash, alright - the dome portion actually appears to have the profile of a hard hat. This article makes me want to get an Open Road and turn it into an engineer's hat. It would have to be a new one though, I doubt there's a vintage 7-3/4 out there for me...
Interesting story, I never knew my engineering antecedents sported the Stetson Open Road by choice. Maybe the engineering link is what explains my inate preference of Stetson over Akubra...
