Yes, I'd like to see the finished product too - I didn't realize W&W did hat renovations and I'd like to know how the work goes.
I think the ribbon does cover stitches and sweat stains. But also, the ribbon will tend to keep the felt from stretching, perhaps causing the stitches to...
I have a Joe Fedora which is polypro - it's not hot at all. The weave is open and lets the breeze through - also, it has a coolmax sweatband that works nicely. It is significantly cooler than my Milan Stetson. It's great for hiking and boating when getting doused with salt water or rained on is...
I've come close to ordering a Douglas, it's really got a nice look. The brim is a little wide for me, but the biggest drawback is the 'no refund - store credit only' policy. The felt quality issue is worrisome - but aren't there different grades of felt from Miller? President, smooth, etc...
My pleasure - my wife bought me a Royal quality hat last winter in NY and it cost that much plus tax, so I think you did well. Hope you enjoy the Chatham as much as I like mine. I keep thinking I'll buy one in gray (mine is sage), but I'm waiting to try a Nostalgia first. Cheers, Carl
The Downs and Chatham are exactly the same shape. The Downs is one level lower on the quality rung (Royal) than the Chatham (Sovereign). Sovereign felt is significantly softer and more malleable than Royal. $180 seems like way too much for a Royal hat. Try Noggintops - with the current coupon...
Sorry about that
Sorry about that - I was referring to the comment above re: "hunting wabbits" and the Stormy Kromer hat posted by Scotrace - no offense taken I hope. I like that hat and the coat too.
With khaki pants
With khaki pants and that wool coat with a light collar, I'll bet you could wear a light-colored open road type hat, e.g. Miller Douglas in fawn, gray or silverbelly:

Others may disagree, of course, but I'd never be...
Bummer
I have two modern Stetsons bought last winter, same size, 7-3/4. One fits perfectly, the other is about a third of a size too big. I used some foam sizing strips behind the sweatband and now it fits well - I guess there's just some variation in sizing. This is probably exacerbated by...
Henchman
From the compact OED online:
henchman
• noun 1 chiefly derogatory a faithful supporter or aide, especially one prepared to engage in underhand practices. 2 historical a squire or page attending a prince or noble.
— ORIGIN from Old English hengest male horse + MAN, the...
Straw homburg
That Dobbs El Dorado is a nice lid, but doesn't come big enough. Hats Plus has it in stock in 5 colors - how about RED for that one 'touch of color'? Yikes!

Oh, lord, don't rent that movie - one of the worst ever made - I saw it for free on a flight and felt ripped off - you'd be better off sitting on your couch for two hours staring at a blank TV.
It would be cool to change that guy into a hat-wearer.
Orvis?
Is there any way those letters could spell Orvis? Don't know if they made hats back when, but it has that outdoorsman look, especially with the cloth sweatband.
Oh yeah, it's a great hat - a friend had one similar when I was a kid.
Looking good
Well, done - if you don't live in NYC, you should probably consider moving here someday - there are plenty of places here where you could fit right in without raising a fuss - New York is great that way...
What happened?
Can I ask what happened to your Nostalgia in the rain? It is next on my "to-buy" list, so if it's sub-par, I'd like to hear about it. I plan to buy the bound-brim version from Bencraft, if it ever arrives (aside - if anyone has a line to Besdor, can you ask him about the...
Well, it was after my time, but I'll wager this was a numbskull reference to Inspector Gadget. I've had a few of those remarks in my time - I'd rather be called Indy, truth be told.
Same goes for me
My car is all warmed up and ready to drive over to Brooklyn so I can try on a Nostalgia with bound brim - my birthday is past but Christmas is coming...
Wow, she dumped quite the load of pent-up anger on you - I can only assume that you happen to look like her oafish and feckless son (or son-in-law). I think you could reasonably send her an invoice for one-on-one, in-the-field anger release therapy. I hope if the same thing happens to me I can...
