Steven - I hope you'll post here when you get the hat in your shop - I'd definitely come over to check it out, even a sample in the wrong size. And I echo the question re: large sizes, specifically 7-3/4.
Atterbury, the last hat I bought is a Stetson Ashland (from Besdor, BTW). It's has a...
Colby Jack, if you're looking for an on-water hat, the Delta is very good - I've used mine a lot in the last year and it looks new. I don't find it completely hot like some others, but then I've never gone to the Amazon. NYC has its share of humidity though. I've been known to dip it on very hot...
Yep
I lost this thread for a bit when it merged - DHermann1 you have a good eye - My dad flew a Republic P-47D, called the "Darling Dorothy" after my mom. And I just saw that plane thread yesterday, I think it's in the WWII forum.
Nobody cringes when they see my sage Stetson, that's just silly. If you don't like green, that's perfectly fine.
And the thread is not drifting, I am suggesting to DrSpeed that he consider a green toned hat as complementary to his daytime wardrobe while doctoring about the countryside...
David Conwill - thank you for posting that ad for the Playboy! I saw that ad somewhere ages ago, couldn't find it, and now here it is. This time I saved it to the 'old hat photo archive'.
Dr. Speed - no one has suggested a hat in green tones like the Playboy ad. I have a Stetson Chatham in...
A possibility
Check the third hat down on the left hand side, it looks pretty close to me:

This is the man mentioned above who could replicate the hat for you.
I too am a low-crown, medium brim kind of guy - I prefer brims from 2-1/4 to 2-1/2. But my hot weather hat has a 3" brim and I've gotten used to it. I toyed with returning it, but received so many compliments when I wore it that I decided that the problem was in my brain, and not with the hat...
FWIW the polypro on the Orvis looks much finer and smoother than the weave on my Riverz Delta. I like the Delta very much for my on-water hat, but it does have a plasticy feel, and looks plastic up close. When I check out the Orvis, I'll post a review. The Travelsmith is interesting looking as...
RBH - I saw this the other day when somebody posted a reference to a dirt-cheap Open Road on sale at Orvis. The OR was sold out, but I noticed this while poking around - I had it wrong, it's called 'packable' not 'foldable'. I'm hoping to check it out in person later this week. If it's big...
I agree that the question is unclear. I have a Riverz hat - the straw does not show sweat, but the band certainly does. As it is a nylon strap, it rinses clean. It is not a dressy hat, however. Orvis has a new foldable fedora version that looks quite nice (it's not tagged as a Riverz, but...
Proof? OK, not really...
Tomasso, it's true that I haven't disproved the story. Of course proving a negative is never easy, and in the case of a word originating hundreds of years ago, most likely impossible. But then again, the 'bolt of cloth' story is not proven either.
I am a logophile...
This is a nice story, but, like many word origin stories is probably a fanciful guess that has been given the veneer of truth through repetition. 'Bespoke' is a newer form of 'bespoken', which is simply the past participle of 'bespeak'. It doesn't have anything to do with bolts of cloth, and...
Worth & Worth is back, but it's not an old-time hat emporium like it used to be. They're on 57th St, on an upper floor, pretty nice setup when I visited, and they're pleasant, too. A little pricey, but the wares seem nice.
