My Strat in sand just arrived from Men's Hats. I will post some photos tomorrow to compare it to an Akubra Capricorn. Some first impressions:
The brim is indeed fairly swoopy as found by others, I could live with it as-is or modify as the material feels light, malleable and easy to tweak. The...
^^^ Your Strat looks good as tweaked, pretty much what I'm looking for - what did you change, exactly?
Re: the Degas, check Bencraft, it's significantly less expensive there.
Hmmm, those Stetson Panama hats are nice, if only they came larger than 7-5/8". They look like the Panama Brewster without the contrasting brim binding.
Exactly - I am reminded of Leslie Howard in "The 49th Parallel", playing a backwoods poet and art lover living in a teepee on the shores of Lake Louise, who has a run-in with a band of rogue Nazis. A great bit of wartime propaganda with a stupendous cast (Raymond Massey, Laurence Olivier, Glynis...
That is a wacky jacket - it looks like a smoking jacket for a professor of forestry or moose studies or something equivalently rustic and Canadian.
EDIT - on re-reading, my post may sound anti-Canadian. This is an illusion, however. I have taken my vacation in Maritime Canada for 9 of the...
After successfully enabling Aureliano, I feel compelled to point out that ordering sand and gray would push your order over the threshold. I'm just sayin'....
Pendleton reissued an older design Ike jacket in tan wool twill a couple of years ago. It looked really nice, but I wasn't in the market for a short jacket at the time. As with all modern retailers, the design was retired after just one season - too bad. Maybe you could find one used somewhere.
Geez, this thread has turned into an advertising spread for high-priced wingtip boots. I also got the impression the OP was looking for something more affordable for warm-weather wear which would not favor boots.
Which one? I'm asking because I haven't seen any bound edge Stetson straws with thin ribbon and medium brim, at least not in my size. I'd be curious to know if I missed one. I ordered this one because it's the proportions I was looking for, not because it's called a Strat.
You know, the Capricorn wasn't offered in size 62 until I asked Sam at EA if he could arrange it, and he managed to convince Akubra to make one. Since then, size 62 has appeared as an option on the other poly straws, first at EA and now on the Akubra site. Maybe you could try the same approach...
Seabass, you might look at Akubra Capricorn also for a vented poly straw work hat - there is an inch or two wide strip above the ribbon where the weave is quite open, enhancing ventilation. You can sort of see the strip in this pic - the Capricorn is on the right:
A friend ordered his from Hartford York yesterday, as Men's Hats was out of his size. FWIW, the same coupon code for Men's Hats worked there too, I guess maybe one company is owned by the other. This is the only time I've seen a Stetson at H-Y that wasn't overpriced compared to other retailers.
I called Bencraft and whoever I spoke to said they had tentatively decided not to stock the hat, but said if I called next week they would order one if I was still interested. However, in the meantime I found a free shipping coupon and so ordered from Men's Hats instead as they had it in stock...
I'm a true 62, 7-3/4, i.e. my cranium has circumference of 24-3/8" and I'm a regular oval. That size 62 Akubra Sydney was a bit big on me. I'll post a review of the straw Strat when I get it, and let you know whether it could go long oval.
