This past Friday, I went to a memorial service wearing a lightweight neutral taupe/gray suit, white shirt, straight black tie, black shoes and a very dark gray straw hat (actually poly straw, an Akubra Capricorn). As I get older, I'm afraid I'm going to need this type of attire more often, and...
Fair enough - my cranium is too large to realistically expect to find vintage, so I make do with modern. For size 7, you should do OK if you're patient and scour the usual sites. Happy hunting...
This is not a vintage hat, but I recently purchased a Stetson Rockport in white from Bencraft, a lounge sponsor. The hat is quite sixties in style and appearance, with a nice striped ribbon and 2" brim - I've been getting a lot of compliments on this lid...
I have a new Whippet and had a Stylemaster, and have to say that they are pretty different. The SM is 4-1/4" tall at the crease, and is more tapered. The Whippet is about 4" tall, and the deeper dents push the sides out a bit, and so is less tapered from the front. The teardrop shapes are really...
I'll second this suggestion. A Capricorn in green or fawn would coordinate with the uniform. There is also the Rink, same hat really, comes in white and cream. The new Stetson Milan Stratoliner (polystraw) might work as well. These poly straws are great in hot weather and get wet with no penalty.
I wouldn't use a lint roller or tape very often, as I'd worry it would eventually raise the nap on the hat.
I think brushing often is OK, as long as you follow the advice above to brush lightly. Brim brushes are pretty stiff, a crown brush is much softer. I don't have a crown brush, but use a...
I probably would have bought both, as I have a tailor that could take care of the rip without it being too visible.
But a definite yes on the sport jacket - then start looking for events to wear it to...
^^^ I agree with the sentiment, but the Banjo Paterson isn't very similar to the Moose River. To upgrade and keep the same look, I would recommend moving up to a Sovereign felt Stetson like the Bear Creek from Noggintops:

Or the Stetson...
Thanks for the info - I think you've tipped me over the edge on ordering a Country Club - pity it's a 3-month wait. It will be nice to have a classy fedora for on-water activities. I've been using a Riverz Delta which I've managed to mostly destroy (after 6 years) and the Joe Fedora is not...
The picture of you in the Country Club looks good as well. I only wear a wide brim while at the beach or kayaking, and have been thinking of getting a Country Club for that purpose. Do you think it would do well? It is important that the brim have some structure to it, so that a strong breeze...
Paul Frederick offers custom shirt tailoring online. They go up to size 22 neck, 40 sleeve, so it's worth a look if you can spend around $100. I have no experience with their shirts, but have several sport jackets that are reasonably good quality and were inexpensive on sale.
In NY I find cotton and linen too hot. The linen suit I had was not the highest quality, however, so that may have been part of the problem. Tropical weight wool is better in my experience, but mostly I don't wear a jacket in the summer if I can help it.
I recently picked up a new sport jacket...
Thanks, and that's a good idea. However, I live in NYC so can go to the flagship store and check them out in person. I was just wondering if someone knew the answer off-hand.
I'm interested in the Brooks Brothers 1818 Madison suit in 3-button. I'm wondering if anyone knows the trouser rise - it seems no one does a proper rise on suit trousers any more. Also, I'm curious if I can expect this suit to go on sale for less than the two for $1600 price currently listed...
