There are many ways to date ties. I don't know what era particularly piques your interest, so i can't say specific qualities here. However, hand-painted art deco ties from the 40s and late 50s are very sought after. For good reason, they're beautiful. Mute patterns don't attract much attention...
To accentuate the 1940's look, myself and many others will likely recommend the more recognizable art deco wide tie. I am not sure knit ties were high fashion in the 1940's, but there are plenty of examples of people wearing them. From an anecdotal perspective, I have seen numerous knit ties...

This one looks lovely. I wonder why no one's bothered to bid yet? Unless there's some major flaw I haven't detected, or me...
I am seriously interested, but not to the extent that I'll pay $300 for a pair. My ideal budget is $120 or less, and Sir Shoe Addict is definitely not THAT philanthropic
I wear a 7, so not far out of the mainstream. Constantly looking for hats in the style of the featherweight I linked.
I thought the same. Also seems like the white lining was taken out, unless it was never there.
My, oh my, does the Vintage Shoe Addict charge a lot. I have not made a transaction with him, but upon discovering his eBay store I've realized how much his immaculate pairs are. Great selection, but FAR out of my price range...
I disagree, and am disappointed with the conservative turn fashion took in the latter half of the 50's and throughout the 60's. I preferred the accentuation of the waist with the jacket cuts, which earlier styles did nicely. And the ultra-skinny tie and lapel thing was laughable. To be more...
I've noticed. Good on the lounge members for squandering this De Beers of an eBay seller. I actually had the notion that he was a member here, I wouldn't dare denounce his practices.
Finding the perfect hat is challenging! Too many stingy brims for me
Seeing timothiescloset's listings is like eyeing a body of water yards away, in the middle of a desert. Great hats he has, but surely I am not the only one who's complained about how ludicrous his pricing is?
I have to be particular about suits for obvious reasons. There's a member on here named Rabbit, whom I'm not sure is still active, but his style was awesome and his clothes fit as if they were bespoke. Pretty much all of his suits were true vintage. An inspiring figure for sure ;)
I just wish...
I was never really a fan of spectators that were black/brown and gray, because they contradict the personality of traditional spectators to me. Nonetheless they look very sharp!
I think the boxy cut with wide shoulder pads was a post-war fad that fell out of fashion quickly, so it wasn't just Jimmy Stewart. I have a DB sports coat that follows this cut, and I'm not particularly against it, but combining it with the wrong accessories makes me end up looking like an 80's...
It's difficult to NOT know the difference between quality fit and badly fitting garbs.
Also, regarding your comment about slim models, in clothing catalogs in the early 20th century the figures modeling the garments are always depicted as towers! Maybe this is what people wished they looked...
