The Affair. season 2 episode 1. This is a really good show. I save it for situations when I have limited access. One of the creators and primary writers is Sarah Treem (House of Cards, In Treatment). She's good. There's a general intimacy with the characters, their thoughts, and the situations that you don't commonly find. Close-ups of faces and eyes that bring the audience into the moment. Good directing. Weirdly, the sex scenes, of which there are fewer than you'd think, are not as powerful and can often be awkward. They aren't the forte of Dominic West (they were strange in The Wire, too) or Maura Tierney, but otherwise, both deliver high-quality performances. The writing is good. This is one of those instances where the quality of the entire team (cinematography, wardrobe, etc) trumps the possible, "I'm not interesting watching another show about divorce." or "There's enough darkness out there. No thanks." This is a dark show, but it is a very strong character study with interesting main characters and smart writing. It's part of the cream of the crop. I'm thankful that I'm behind a season and a half.

Doctor Who The Power Of The Deleks. I finally saw all the episodes. It makes more seance now that I understand why these animated episodes were made! I never saw the episodes with Patrick Troughton, my first was number four Tom Baker, didn't care for him, so only watched a couple of episodes. I do like number 10, David Tennant, though I understand he is one of the least like Doctors!

"Richard III" on Great Performances, closing out the "Hollow Crown" series. Nothing says Christmas like a tale of multiple murder, infanticide, boundless greed and a world totally awash in evil. And all of it genius in harness to propaganda to legitimize the rule of the treacherous Tudor family. Happy Holidays!

I'm working my way through the second season of Daredevil on Netflix. Overall it's not as good as the first season, but it has its moments.

 

[Fading Fast]

Season (and, probably, series) finale of "Good Girls Revolt." Despite having an outstanding second half to the first season (I thought it was 2 short seasons, but they broke one season into two as some shows do now - whatever), Amazon is not picking the show up for a second season.

Which proves that if a show's total audience equals 2 people (my girlfriend and me), then, chances are, it won't pay to keep making it. It is a shame that this show never caught a following as it really took off in the last five episodes. If you have Amazon Prime - please check it out and don't be turned off by the only okay first few episodes - it really picks up later on.

I have enjoyed Rufus Sewell for some time, but this is some of his best work.
This season has been a treat so far.

This season has been a treat so far.

Sewell is killing it in the role. It takes incredible acting talent to make me feel sympathy for him at times when, mainly, he's just another Nazi you want to see get his. He manages to bring a nuance to the standard Nazi-evil where he can be frighteningly cold, calculating and, almost, inhuman, but then convey a sincere warmth and decency to his family and friends.

He is a psychopath (as I understand the term) which means he has to show an incredible range of emotions - he must be loving the role.

Also, the Japanese trade minister and the Japanese police inspector are fantastic actors displaying great depth and nuance.

Finally, Alexa Davalos as Julianna Crane is incredible. She, too, shows a range of emotions that is amazing.

IMHO, this is the best show on TV (of course, of those that I've seen).

And in the end, ole Uncle Adolph has more in his "castle" than the other guy did. Still, after a slow first episode, the remainder of the season was gangbusters.

I was mentioning last night how they have made it so that we feel something like compassion for the Japanese police inspector (Joel de la Fuente) and Sewell's character by bringing touches of humanity to them. The acting overall is much better than most shows. I have always found Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (the Trade Minister) to be an interesting actor, but am really enjoying him here. Thank you Amazon.

That is good news. We are taking it slow with our viewing; trying to pace ourself. We want to get to the end, but we do not want it to end.

... I have always found Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (the Trade Minister) to be an interesting actor, but am really enjoying him here. Thank you Amazon.

He, along with several other cast members we've mentioned, should be walking away with Emmys. I find the two young male leads - the ones who play Joe and Frank - adequate but not up to the level of acting of those we have been talking about.
