Feels like Guam in Chicago today. Hot, humid and raining. I decided to stand in my front yard with my Hercules and let it get wet then wear it until dry. I really love this jacket. Every time I put it on it gets better.

It does help with creases though with this particular jacket, being a hide I don’t know, I just wanted to see how it would react to the rain. Shrinkage would obly occur if the jacket was exposed to heat after being wet. That’s a no no.

Totally depends on the hide. Chrome tanned, you are ok in the rain. Veggie tanned....no, probably not.

For Aero, Vanson, and LW type jackets, I practice some of what is indicated here: http://www.aeroleatherclothing.com/break-in.php

However, other than wearing in the rain and then wearing until it's dry (letting body heat alone help the drying process) I do nothing else to help speed the break-in process.

Wearing A New Horsehide Jacket
This is much easier, just wear it, don't be precious with it, don't mollycoddle it, but don't ever hang it up on a hook at the back of the neck.

Otherwise, these jackets like to be treated roughly... but don't leave it on the back of a chair in a pub whatever you do, it'll be gone in a flash in most areas, quicker than you could say "Where's the gardener?"

Treating The Leather
This is even easier. Do nothing, absolutely nothing. Do not oil it, don't treat it with hide food - even ours, this is for old steerhide jackets and dried up old vintage horsehide jackets from the 1930s and 1940s, not for your Aero, well not until maybe 2035.

I think some of it has to do with the type of leather itself and not just the tanning process. But I don’t know how much it affects it. Horsehide and goatskin are supposed to be pretty waterproof from what I’ve read. I don’t know if it being vegetable tanned would change that completely. Veg tan cowhide is not water resistant at all. It ***** up the water. And my chrome tanned hh is great in the rain. Never had veg tan hh or goat so I can’t say from experience... I’d be interested to know the specifics.

Also getting a jacket wet can help soften the leather, which is helpful with leather like CXL horsehide which can be like a suit of armor when it’s new.
I think they all end up porous eventually, I had an older Vanson Model B in comp weight which was as waterproof as a handkerchief, it must have been worn for years in all weathers.

One of my favourite jackets once the weather turns cooler: Fitzrovia jacket in olive green corduroy by Old Town. Sadly no longer available, this is a ‘20s influenced design with neatly profiled lapels with revers, trademark cuff shape

, flapped pockets, and figured back. Great fabric that can only be described as plush... Paired today with High Rise trousers (Old Town) in black canvas.

Late afternoon now and very wet in Bristol city centre, but with the collar flipped this is really warm, dry, and comfortable. Every summer I forget how much I enjoy wearing this jacket. Definitely one of Will Brown’s best designs, can’t think why it’s not still available.

Yeah, I'm quite the same. Let the leather dry out for a day and treated it to a slight layer of leather conditioner. Looks, feels and smells great
