Okay, now I've been looking at the Vanson site and there are loads I want. They're less expensive than I thought...

Bear in mind too that their site only showcases about half of what they can do. They've been promising a site update for some time but it's not been done. Sign up for their email list, you'll be glad you did!

What Ton says; and even more than half as they can basically do quite literally anything you can think of. Every once in a while something so utterly wild and out-worldly pops up on eBay, and always really nice. And yeah, great prices. Seriously, best jackets in the world.

Check out their Japanese website:

Much, much better photos and it showcases even more stuff they're doing.

Ahh that site is gonna give me the ole' leather blue balls. Crumbs, better start saving. Do they only have the two leather choices (Firenze and comp weight)? How does the competition weight compare with CXL FQHH? I'm thinking of something a little gentler and black for my next one.
The pricing's a little confusing. I see that it's 15% extra for custom specs, but from the sounds of it the possibilities are far greater than changing pockets and lining. I wonder how that works out price wise. It's just a shame that it would cost me an extra 25% in customs and VAT to order to the Netherlands.

Picked this one up from my Cousin for a VERY good price. He purchased it on eBay, and wasn't satisfied with it for whatever reason.

This is a sweet, vintage, custom deerskin jacket, made by Custom Coat Co. Berlin, Wisconsin. It has the unusual feature (to me) of a knit waistband, and zippered MC-style cuffs. Also unusual because it's in the A-2 configuration of a one-piece back, and two-piece sleeves. Must have been quite the large deer. ;) Fits me like a bespoke jacket.

This must have been rarely worn, since the shell and lining looks like brand-new for around a 50 year old jacket. The grain on the deerskin is out-of-this-world, and also sports Talon zippers all around.. I love the cut of the collar as well. I may post a short review on it soon..

Excuse the stubble seen.. I'm growing out my beard some before styling / trimming..

The comp weight is far stiffer than any CXL hide and it takes a bit longer to break in. When it does tho. Oh man it's rewarding. TBH there is nothing less comfortable than a new comp weight jacket. The leather literally needs to be abused.
As far as the fierenze goes...I don't care for it. They do have other more appealing lighter weight hides, like z-150, which maintains the attractive qualities of the comp weight at a slightly lighter, less stiff feel.

Forget Firenze exists. Seriously. You want Comp. weight. As for how it compares... What Ton said. While technically it's only a little bit heavier than the CXL, I don't think I've ever handled a leather that actually compares to it. It's armour. Literally. Extremely tough wearing hide. Very resistant to just about anything and I know people say this for many makers but breaking in Vanson comp. weight leather really takes time. Like, years. Totally worth it, though.

Blimey, maybe z-150 or a 2nd hand one that's preabused might be better for me, when the time comes. Not in the market for anything for a good while, but like any good addict I'm already thinking about it. An Enfield without zip sleeves would be pretty sweet I think.

I can't imagine wearing anything stiffer than new CXL.

Vanson comp weight cowhide is by far the BEST MC cowhide. Of course, if the pattern is non-athletic, then you'll be in a world of stiffness, but luckily, Vanson's patterns are all very mobile, mobile sleeve attachment, lower sleeve cap, pre-curved elbow, high armpit, as i said in another post, you won't actually feel you are wearing a brand new stiff jacket, all that needs to move moves. The cowhide will break in soft and nice, it is pliable, doesn't jerk back, when couple with brass zippers it looks amazing. The Vanson comp weight is the only leather I actually don't want to break in, so it gives the Terminator I'll be back look. On that note, i think Bates also offers a cowhide like that, so if you custm order a Bates HIGHWAYMAN I, then you will recreate the I'll be back jacket, wear it collar-up.

They really can. Here's an example of a club patch that I had Vanson do a small run on for my local group here in the PNW. It wasn't my design, as our club had previously had Vanson do a run of special club jackets using this design. I simply had to get permission from our club pres before Vanson would proceed with my order.
