What Jacket Are You Wearing Today?

I thought I will show off my CXL steer, with which I have kinda love hate relationship.

The aesthetic is absolutely fabulous and this is the optimal length for this jacket to be worn in all its glory. Your sense of style is very apparent sir, and sets you apart.

The trouble with cxl, as you are finding out, is that though it looks great and is great for falling off a motorcycle in, its not great for wearing. It's just too heavy for comfort and while there are guys who'll argue otherwise, those individuals are a select minority. There is a good reason why it's use is not widespread and is limited to only a handful of specialist makers. On this subject, JC uses it, he has some russet, but his is a thinned down version i.e. what the industry ss a while generally terms 'garment weght'. I respect it as a leather, but for. other applications only since a jacket that becoomes uncomfortably heavy and a chore to carry round on my back after an hour or so ain't much good to me. Given the alternative, I prefer jackets that I could wear in comfort for the whole day

Ok today is a special day here in Iowa. It's sunny, and going up to around 35F / +2 C with anticipation of snow tomorrow. So here's to some great light, and the hope that spring is really coming!

Here's the Restoration jacket Kosay sent my way. It's really a neat vintage piece that, surprisingly, fits quite well. This is a Guide Master Wolf jacket in relatively original condition. Estimate the vintage at early 50's

I owned a Brando type motorcycle jacket I bought from Excelled back in the 70's when I visited their factory in Edison , NJ.
Owned it for many years till I eventually grew out of it. I know you have a LW G-1 among other nice ones. What sets this Excelled G-1
apart that it's a favorite?

Wadr, your comments here are an attempt to pass off a personal preference for a general truth, as far as I can follow your argument. Perhaps one reason CXL HH is not in more general use today is because there are far fewer horses around than there used to be, which makes it more expensive. Also, it's tougher to work with, requiring skilled machinists and special equipment. The vast majority of clothing manufacturers today are striving for cheaper materials and faster production, which makes a material like horsehide or cowhide anathema. As to your comments about comfort, this seems to be your only criteria for clothing and, if this were so, we'd all be better off wearing nothing but velvet. There are a number of reasons why the vast majority of fliers, on all sides of various conflicts, have preferred the material, some of them having to do with bodily protection. Your main idea that CXL is just so incredibly exhausting to wear, an argument we've heard here from time to time, is purely subjective. I've been wearing it for decades and have never been bothered by it in the least; in fact, I never noticed it at all until someone on this forum complained about it. It's stiff a bit at first, but one's body heat softens it up considerably after a few moments of wear, and the weight has always seemed negligible to me as it's distributed over the shoulders. Sorry for running on, but it's a bad idea to impose on others your private opinions and intimate that those who don't agree are somehow silly or distracted. That kind of thing is all too common on many other forums, but it isn't appreciated here.

I'm loving my CXL burden I've never felt it's hard to wear past about the first 5 minutes. Coming straight out of the box yeah but I still maintain next to Vansons comp weight (when new), CXL feels like melted butter on hot toast. And it smells like HEAVEN!

I've had cxl jackets with years on the clock that were as soft as cxl can ever be. But even in that state it was not a jacket that could be worn all day without the weight of the thing eventually making it uncomfortable to the point that carrying it is definitely preferable to wearing.

So while im happy that you and Ton and others can enjoy it I'm sad that I just cannot. I do know what I'm talking about and that is the situation at my end. Whether I am overly sensitive or not I still cannot help but believe that it is only a small minority of leather jacket wearers who can happily wear cxl for long periods of time outside of riding.

Yours is a long aero HB yes Bob, which must weigh a ton and I'm sitting here wondering when it is worn for how long it stays on your back? For me more than an hour and it's gonna need to come off. Hence leathers that could be worn all day if needs be are my preference

I think that when a CXL jacket is not properly sized the weight is felt. Moreo than the weight it's the rigid nature of the hide that will bite the wearer, but I've only noticed this on jackets I've sized too small. Heck, same could be said of a 2oz Brooks. If I tried to cram into a 40" I'd be miserable in a matter of minutes...and that might legitimately be a 3lb jacket at best.
I get it tho, CXL isn't for everybody but there must be a fair # of folks who love it b/c Aero can't keep it stocked fast enough.
