Talking about fit, I just received a new Akubra Stylemaster. I am not used to new hats and fit this a bit stiff. Does it take a while to break in a new hat where it conforms to your head and feel more comfortable?
So why does it seem men had smaller hat sizes back in the day? There are a ton of size 7 and below, but few size 7 3/8 to 7 1/2 vintage hats on the market. Doesn’t make sense.
I recently purchased a Borsalino with the same kind of white sticker and price tag of $22.00 in a Rogers and Peet hat box. I think the sticker indicates ~1961-65. It’s the nicest felt I have ever handled. Pictures above from previous post I am responding to.
From looking at the examples listed with photos earlier, the tag indicates it was made between 1961-65. Here is the quote,"Then we get the cerrated labels with straight edges left and right (like they were on a roll of one label wide) and the model name no longer appears in the lower right...
deadlyhandsome, I am a novice at quality hats, a newbie, but according to Kevin at JJ Hats, Qualitia Superiore is the best quality of today and recent ears and Augusta, etc., are lower quality. I saw saw two vintage hats for sale one was superiorie and the other augusta, so I figured the former...
Borsalino Quality designations are availbale in abundance too:
qualitá speciale
qualitá extra extra superiore
qualitá extra superiore
qualitá superiore

qualitá extra finissima
qualitá suprema

qualitá superlativa
qualitá victoria...
I am a new hat enthusiast and my first purchase, I picked up a size 7 3/8 Borsalino for $45.00. The label underneath the band indicates it was made between 1954-1960. I am amazed how soft the felt is. I love it.
Nice, I just purchased two vintage Rogers and Peet Borsalinos both include the Rogers and Peet hat boxes. One only has the Roger and Peet label on the liner. Now waiting for their arrival.
belfastboy, I hear you. If I had a size 7 or smaller I could get a ton of vintage Borsas for under $100 each. So what gives, did blokes back in day have smaller heads?
Deadlyhandsome, thanks. What would you suggest for a newbie in vintage hat collecting what to look for in purchasing vintage fedoras? What hat companies has a superior product, which were on the lower end? Cheers.
That is a possible scenario. But nearly every hat Kevin owns is a Borsalino. But he always says only get the superiore models and cautions the others are of inferior quality. Regarding the latest Borsalinos, he says he is going by the word of his owner who did not carry them for a long while but...
