I do the best I can without being a slave to it. Most vintage clothes don't fit me, so I wear new vintage-inspired or classic clothes. A pincurl set won't dry in eight hours on my head in the winter, so I use a curling iron instead. I won't go out in wash-and-wear hair.
Cute. And more ingratiating than those Christmas family newsletters that say, "Jim got a promotion...Madison skipped a grade...Kenny got a fellowship...we bought a yacht...I'm writing this from Hawaii..."
Agreed. I believe in clothes suiting the wearer's lifestyle and the occasion. Do your shoes need to slide easily into a stirrup? Is your shirt likely to get caught in barbed wire? Are you out in the blinding western sunlight all day? No? Probably, you don't need to dress like a cowboy.
A Claymation Christmas
Here's one of my favorites, and I've only seen it once, almost 20 years ago. The only reason I watched it was because I was too tired to change the channel. But it turned out to be priceless.

Darwinian Breeding
I don't know much about dog breeding, only that the animal shelters are full of dogs that needs homes. Some of them are smart and vigorous enough to have lived on the street. The dog I adopted had some problems, but the time, money and effort it took to fix them has been...
Part of the point of clothing is to protect us from the elements. Keep in mind that the fabric of winter clothes used to be thicker.
I have some Land's End clothing; in fact, I wore one of their parkas today, and probably will on most days until March or April. I never thought of their coats...
True, but I don't see where anybody made that claim in this thread. According to a director I know at a blood center, people are entering their 50s and 60s much healthier than they used to.
Perhaps this is a question of how to stay trim and well groomed. One way is to move to or work...
I have no sentimentality about childhood, and didn't find this movie at all sentimental. To me, it showed, in a funny way, all the frustrations and the thousand little hells of being a child. Yet Ralphie was a pretty good kid through it all, and that made him a sympathetic character.
Scaling Back
It used to be the custom that only children received Christmas gifts. My parents and I are reviving that one. None of us has minor children, so we aren't bothering with gifts for each other.
As for their great-grandchildren, they never call and never say thank you for presents...
I'm curious: do your friends and acquaintances tend to have a much different style from you?
Some people who know both me and my best friend find it odd that we're friends since we seem so different. In many ways, we are. But we have the same favorite clothing store and almost all my jewelry...
I never said that wearing certain clothing was a moral failing. I said, or tried to, that people used to try to cover their faults. Now it's fashionable to put faults, physical and otherwise, on display in various ways.
"Even those who want to dig deeper have to start with the surface."
You can't avoid making an impression with your clothes. Appearance is a major clue most of use to size people up. It's not always accurate, but that doesn't mean we should quit using it.
In days of old, books were bound to...
