Maybe it's because I'm from out West, but "may I be of assistance" sounds a little affected. As much as I hate bad grammar, "Can I help you" (in spoken form) doesn't bother me at all. :)

I'm reading a new novel called Winter in Madrid that takes place in 1940. The writing and descriptions are vivid and seem realistic. Here's the description from Publisher's Weekly:
The playing fields of Rookwood did little to prepare reluctant spy Harry Brett for the moral...
Undertow, your story reminds me of my brother Bob. Our cousin Jim told us this story at Bob's funeral (no, Bob didn't die in a firearm accident--different brother).
Jim and Bob were coming home from Uncle Leslie's funeral and Bob was plinking signs along the road as he was driving (he was...
My favorite quote
"The judge, Mr Justice Blake, said the Gurkhas' long service, conspicuous acts of bravery and loyalty to the Crown all pointed to a 'moral debt of honour' and gratitude felt by British people."
And once you've taken time, effort and thought at the outset to put together a wardrobe that suits you and your life, it eventually becomes easy to put together an outfit. One great thing about a traditional tan trenchcoat is you don't have to think about it.
One finer point of firearm safety: kids shouldn't handle guns without a responsible and knowledgeable adult present and in charge, even if they know how to handle guns. Talk about this issue with the parents of your children's friends. My brother Marvin might still be alive if this rule had been...

It isn't Marilyn, Sugar
According to IMDB,
Marilyn Monroe required 47 takes to get "It's me, Sugar" correct, instead saying either "Sugar, it's me" or "It's Sugar, me". After take 30, Billy Wilder had the line written on a blackboard. Another scene required Monroe to rummage through some...
It was in the 70s here today--beautiful for walking in downtown Denver.
I'm happy to get away from politics, too. Thank goodness our office manager put the kibosh on political rants.
Manolo gave an interview for the blog Deep Glamour. He mentions Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo, and The Great Gatsby. Here's his definition of glamor:
Glamour is the peculiar and elusive characteristic that combines, in unspecified and unspecifiable proportions, the qualities of charisma, style...
My workouts include dance, weightlifting and, once in a while, walking and running on a treadmill. I chose those exercises because they keep me lean and fit, I can do them at home. I chose dancing as an aerobic exercise for those reasons, plus I enjoy it and it isn't hard on my body.
No, I...
