    The Lure of Opulent Desolation

Maybe part of the problem is that people didn't expect to see an article like this in a newspaper. Or, indeed, it could be that some people read it too quickly. I found the article murky, but I agree that the author was talking about an ideal, which exists only in the mind. Possibly, that's...

    The Lure of Opulent Desolation

I think the author is saying that a lot of us would like to live the ideal 50s life: Many of us, deep down, yearn for it, having experienced divorce or other sorts of family dislocation in the 1970s. We keep alive a secret dream of “a model of routine and order and organization and...

    "A Scent of History"

I love the smell of an old library! I love books and I really liked the librarian at my first grade school. The librarian at my next grade school, Mrs. Boris, was a different story. I read in a high school yearbook that some of the students signed a petition for her dismissal.

    Colds and Flu Time!

Antibiotics have been around for awhile. :) But penicillin and other antibiotics won't help a cold (rhinovirus) or flu (influenza virus). Handwashing as a preventive medicine practice has only been around for a little over a hundred years, I think. I know that being cold isn't supposed...

To black tie or not to black tie

You can wear casual clothes without being a slob. Slacks, a shirt and a pullover sweater are casual yet nice. Unless Anglophile's family goes barefoot and doesn't bother to comb their hair, such an outfit shouldn't stick out.

To black tie or not to black tie

Though I'm a little late, I'll say no as well. One of the tenets of good manners is, or used to be, to avoid attracting attention. When you attract attention, it makes the occasion all about you. In that sense a tuxedo at a casual family gathering is the equivalent of an orange jumpsuit. If...

    Eartha Kitt died on Christmas

I saw Eartha Kitt a few years ago in Cinderella as the fairy godmother. She was terrific. When Santa Baby was released as a 45, my Uncle Loren bought a copy for Aunt Helen. She still has it. I can't imagine anyone making such a greedy song sound charming, as Eartha Kitt did.

    Do you eat vintage?

Yes, just like Andy and Opie. :) My parents and I ate a lot of trout and my father killed a deer or an elk every year. I just had sardines, Wasa rye crackers and celery for dinner. I'm not really a fan of vintage meals, but sardines are full of protein, calcium, fatty acids, iron, they're...

    Inadvertant Advertisments

Miss Manners said that for a long time, she thought that a certain couple she knew was named Ann and Calvin Klein. Some old game shows actually featured obvious advertising, but Alfred Hitchcock always made gentle fun of his sponsors.

Silent Night My dad I and watched this movie last night. American and German soldiers have Christmas dinner in a German woman's house during the Battle of the Bulge. Based on a true story.

I also love potted flowers. It will soon be time to start geraniums from seed, even though it isn't even winter yet.

    Calling all Rustics!

Why the Change to "Rustic"? When I saw the title of this thread, I thought of people living in a log cabin. My dictionary defines rustic (n) as 1. A rural person. 2. A crude, coarse, or simple person. The Latin root (rus) means country. A purist is "One who practices or urges strict...

    "How does your garden grow?"

I love lots of shrubby roses, trellises, plants and lawn, but the extremes in temperatures here make plant choices limited. The high two days ago was about 8F (-13C); in the summer, it regularly gets over 100F (38C). It's dry here too. The old garden roses actually take the climate very...
