Fed IV Comparison
Well, right now the only vintage I've got is a 40 or 50 year old western conversion that's 100% beaver, so hard to say, especially since the company that renovated it put tons of stiffener in. Compared to vintage hats I've owned, I'd say the felt is a wee bit more coarse, but...
Deluxe
I've never felt the other grade of felt from Akubra. My Campdraft, Squatter, Stylemaster and new Fed IV have all been Imperial quality. I do have to say that the Fed IV is very soft, and the sweat seems to be made of slightly thinner and more supple leather than my other Imperial...
Hatsdirect is my favorite
I've gotten 3 hats from HatsDirect, and one from David Morgan. I don't feel like I saved any real money going from Morgan's, and the wait wasn't enough shorter that I would buy from them again. Perhaps if they had more color choices available in their Fed IV style...
Dark hat plus sun
Elvisroe - I live in a desert area of California, and have been wearing cowboy hats since I was in a stroller. My grandfather always used to say only a fool would wear a black hat when it was warm, and I was always skeptical. A few springs and summers cowboying in the desert...
Fed IV
Akubra's size 63 is exactly what it claims to be, and what most companies would list as a 63. It fits a bit loose on me, which is what I like. Akubras seem to snug up a bit over time, and I've already taken the felt strips out after one week. And no, I don't usually have to order...
Your Burma Adventurer?
Mr. Lucky - I take it you received your Burma Adventurer? I hope you are happy with it. I'm still bummed it wasn't big enough for my gorilla sized head. Hope you enjoy it. Frank
Problem
Only problem with wearing a piece of hosiery on your head (besides your friends catching you) is that most of the pantyhose type stuff is fairly slippery, and will help your hat fly off if the wind starts up. Spending many hours driving cattle, herding horses and taking city slickers...
Make an Offer!
Other hats coming soon. Panic setting in. Package deal? $125 for both shipped. Trades considered, make me an offer. If the Campdraft is too tall and wide-brimmed, I have a Stetson conversion similar (see Conversion Corral for pix) that I could let go for the same price, and...
He Did Good
Agreed, that hat looks just right. Nice to see a young guy who isn't wearing something trendier. Don't get me wrong Tone, I thought my Adventurer was a fine hat, just misrepresented size-wise. I would call what my Fed is bashed in right now a diamond/center crease. I find that...
Nice Whippet
I'm expecting a Whippet from Art pretty soon, so it's great to see some photos of something similar. When you are in Rancho Mirage, you'll be close to home for me. If I see a fella wearing a superb hat, I'll honk at you. Great stuff. Frank
Adventurer vs Fed IV
I just had both of these hats shipped to me in the last two weeks, so I can make a pretty good comparison. Felt on the Christy's was much smoother and softer feeling. I did not have to use steam or water on either one to bash them. I still have the Fed IV, the Christy's...
Size Small?
I find it odd that both I and Carl (carldelo) have recently posted our Christy's hats in the classifieds for the same reason: smaller than advertised. I've not seen any other company list a size 63 as 7 3/4, but that's definitely what mine was. I mentioned this and the color...
Nuke's questions
J - gtd is right on the money with the 63 Squatter, it would take some shrinking. Doable, but a bit of work. The Campdraft, however, is starting to snug up a bit, and would be pretty close to your size with a good steaming or some heat. I will be enclosing the sizing strips...
Whippets
I'm also a huge Whippet fan, but since I wear a 7 3/4 long oval, they are few and far between for me. I remedied this by having Art make one for me, should be coming in a few weeks. Maybe that will cure the sting of being too bigheaded for most vintage finds. Frank
Why?
Why did I have to read this thread? All those hundreds of hat pins I've collected, and the dozens more my grandpa left in his drawer when he died are still hanging around. I thought I was safe from pin fever, and that I'd leave all my nice fedoras un-pierced. Now I've already ordered...
Catalena
gtd - They did exactly what I asked them to do, and did a good job on the brim binding. I had to remind them once to get updates, as they are very busy, but overall I'm pleased with their work. When I get the other one back from Az-Tex I'll post the results. I believe their quote...
