Probably posted before somewhere, but I just saw "Conflict," one of the rare movies where Bogart plays a twitchy semi-evil guy, more like "Treasure of the Sierra Madre." Lots of hats on everyone, but especially the street scenes, of which there are several. Just a sea of different hat styles...
I think it's for the photo. You can't ride a horse long with your hat tilted back like that, unless it's a really calm day. My grandfather, an old-school photographer, used to always have subjects tilt their headgear back so it wouldn't cast a shadow on the face. Anyway, that's what I think...
My grandfather died in March 2009, and he was 99 years old. As recently before his death as January of that year, he was still riding his big quarterhorse at least two or three times a week out in the desert. He had a small glass of tequila nearly every day, and said it was the secret to his...
Dan - I've got a nice WM poster of Waddie Mitchell, signed by William, appears to be wearing the same hat as in your post. I've met Don Edwards many times, and he is a real Western treasure. Also seen the Sons of the San Joaquin a dozen times or so. Seems like we've got very similar taste in...
On that particular hat, I think what you're seeing as too tall is the narrowness from the front view. Instead of bringing down the crown height (which looks fine to me), try popping the side dents out a little at the rear, so that they are only in the front half of the hat. That should make...
Both are roughly the same measurements, 1 7/8" brim, 5 1/2" crown, both with nice 2" ribbons. No visible flaws or damage on either, both sweats are supple, all brand markings intact, and the liners are worn but not dirty or stained. Excellent condition as far as I can see. The Dobbs has an...
Robert - I like that little silver hat a lot. We mostly call them bandana, neckerchief or scarf slides out this way, and that's one of the nicest I've seen. At one time, I had a couple dozen antique sterling slides, and wore them with whatever "wild rag" I was using at the time. I still have...
Tom, nearly every modern Stetson I've bought as "Silverbelly" seems to be the color of Akubra's "Silverbelly," which Stetson used to call "Ranch Tan." The only hat I've gotten lately that looks like the more grey-toned Silverbelly I grew up with was a Resistol, and they call it different names...
Oh Tonyb - you have shattered my hopes. I am still indeed waiting for my "Open Door," as Miller Hats is a bit pokey, and neglected to mention that they didn't have my size on hand in Silverbelly until a few weeks had passed. I hope it is better quality than the one above previously owned by my...
Probably posted here in the past by another owner, but new to me. A deep blue Borsalino with tasty crimson binding and ribbon, bought at a great price from a fellow Lounger. First non-black-grey-brown colored hat for me, I'm not much for flash, but this one sure is nice. Hard as hell to...
Speaking of calibers, I've got a Colt in 38-40 WCF that belonged to the man in my avatar, but I'm pretty sure it would make a bigger hole in a card than most of my other firearms of more modern manufacture.
Back to actual hats, here's one that's new to me, an eBay find. Akubra Silver Spur in Glen Grey. 5 12/" crown, 3 1/2" brim. Feels like a bigger Campdraft with no bound brim. Not sure what shape this one will take in the future, but it was a hell of a deal on a hat I've not seen in this color...
