I should post new pictures of this hat. I've since tamed the brim curl and have it in a taller crown shape. My first photo makes it look a bit tapered, which it is not. Frank
I recently got my first Deluxe from Hatsdirect. I've had many examples of their Imperial hats, and mostly ordered a Fed IV Deluxe because that's what they had in my huge size in black at the time. As much as I love Akubras and I'm a very loyal Hatsdirect customer, I think the difference for me...
I've been trying not to sell this one, but ever since Optimo put the new roan leather sweat in, it's just a bit snug. Too nice to stretch. Got it from GTDean, and it used to be a 7 3/4 extra long oval. By far the lightest weight felt I own. New sweat, as mentioned, and new ribbon. Original...
I like the same things in a western hat that I prefer in a dress hat or fedora. Thin, pliable felt that I can re-shape if I want to. A thick, stiff hat is a guaranteed wreck-causer on a windy day if you're horseback. At the least, you'll spend a lot of time bonking into objects and people...
That's a good price for a new OR. I've been wanting to pick one up, but if it's anything like the quality of the 4X Rancher I bought last month, I don't want one. Thick, coarse, and stiff as cardboard. I take it back, that's an insult to cardboard. I'm going to have to dunk this one in a...
Thanks Rusty. Neophyte - having worn a "Gus" since before there was a "Gus," I appreciate it. I've had hats in this shape since I was a teen, and remember when my friends called it a "Tom Horn hat," after the Steve McQueen movie from 1980. I grew up looking at photos of relatives in similar...
I'm more of a 3X, but I had recently bought an old Pendleton jacket that sounded about the same size that fit very well, so I took a shot. I'm between a 54 and 56, but I'm 6'5", so I need length as well as width. This fits me zipped up without being embarrassingly tight, but not roomy enough...
I like that 2 3/4" brim. My OR 25 has a 2 1/2" brim, and it's the only thing I'd change about it, besides the few moth bites. I may have to take a shot if Christmas gets boring. Frank
This is a Pendleton I won on eBay, only to find it's just a hair smaller than I would like. Size XXL, not super vintage, but not a model I can find anywhere. Zip up, shirt-jac style, great vintage-style muted colors. Tag says "assembled in Mexico of fabric from U.S.A." Button sleeve...
Has anyone tried one of the Miller Hats "Open Door," made by Biltmore? Looks like a pretty good alternative to modern low-crowned ORs, and long waits from Australia. Thanks, Frank
I've put Campdrafts in cattleman creases, and they work well for that. Much easier to work with should you get the crease wrong than a new Open Road. For my money, my Campdrafts are closer to my vintage OR than the new model OR is, despite the name. Frank
I haven't gotten a pair in 20 years, because they still function, but my grandfather got me a pair of Paul Bond custom boots when I turned 18, and himself wore the same brand most of the last half century. They're pricey, but worth it. Mine are shark, and the ones I have from the early 80s...
Bick 4 is good stuff for vintage leather, as is RM Williams Saddle Dressing. A product I have used before with great results on extremely valuable or very old leather is called Blackrock Leather N Rich. Cheesy name, but some folks I know from a well-respected Western auction house use it...
I'll edit my snarky reply, and direct any questions to page 2 of the Courtney Hats thread. Everyone there seems to think these hats were from the 60s, at best guess. I guess that's fairly recent, if I think of my birth 46 years ago as "recent." Thanks for the interest. Frank...
