I talked to the "CulturedCowboy" folks, and wasn't impressed with their awareness of what they had in stock. The lady tried to talk me into a 7 3/8, didn't seem sure what a 7 3/4 was. While we were talking, she remarked "Oh wow, I didn't know we sold a $4,000 hat. That's wild. Says it...
I'm taking a shot on one of these new ORs while I'm waiting for my Biltmore "Open Door" to come in a few weeks. I had one lined up in my size at the Resistol Outlet in Garland, then found out that Delmonico's free shipping and coupon (till 12/31?) made the overall price $4 lower than the...
I've got about 7 of that same vendor's free-standing hat stands, and they are excellent. You can bend the circular part down at an angle so your hat doesn't get any bumps in the crown. Great folks to deal with, good products. Frank
Much as I wanted to love this movie, and as huge a Coen Bros fan as I am, I'm more in agreement with Salty's take on this film. I saw the John Wayne version last week, and read the book years ago. I also take issue with the fact that this is being touted as more faithful to the book. I love...
I've got one on order, exchanged it for a disappointing Miller Hats 8X western. When they get done dragging their feet on the exchange, I'll post photos and impressions. I've got my fingers crossed. Frank.
J.B. - if you don't mind me asking, is the crown height on that OR 4"? Maybe it's just your photos, but it looks taller, like an older OR. The low crown on these new ones is the reason I've stayed away, but yours looks excellent on you. Reminds me of Casey Affleck in "The Killer Inside Me."...
Thought I posted last night - must have had too much nog. Mackey Hatters are a pleasure to deal with, and make a fine hat. I've had one for seven or eight years now, and it has held up to unmentionable abuse. Merry Christmas. Frank
The "X" system is loads of fun. I generally disregard it. If I'm fishing on eBay for western hats, I use a combination of approximate era + photo evidence + sweatband markings + "XXX" description and model name + a large percentage of "what the hell, it's cheap" to make my guesses. I took a...
Like you said, a very "subjective opinion thing." We have both stated our opinions, and it sounds like we've got about the same length of time wearing cowboy hats. I lived in lovely hot and humid Houston the first 20+ years of my life, and in the up to 120+degrees heat of the California desert...
Not everyone will agree, but despite the fact that almost all cowboy hats are heavily stiffened, the grade of felt is a factor for comfort and durability. My hats that have a higher level of beaver, including an older one that is 100% beaver, tend to be thinner, easier to break in, more...
T Rick - you didn't do it wrong. Different people have different methods, but the way you're describing is the way I've been shaping my hats for several decades now. Some hats just won't take a dry crease, you have to wet them or steam them first. To the original poster - open crown for me...
Dinerman - I know you're into tenors. I received one of these about a month ago, and it just keeps getting better. Republic guitars, Asian made, imported through a Texas company. It's the Highway 49 model. I use my two tenors mostly in GDAE, coming from a mandolin background. Really great...
Ahh, the good old days when you could still drink the water without getting some kind of weird intestinal parasites. Been a long time since I drank from a creek, although I think I would have had my taste before my horse was standing in it. Frank
