Following an Unfamiliar Lead
I actually like dancing with guys who are just learning because it forces me to follow better. There's also a guy in the scene--a teacher and national champ--who doesn't do official moves, he just leads his own stuff. In both cases, I'm forced to pay more attention...
Leads: Are You Using a Light Pressure? If So, Please Read This
There are leads who aren’t exactly noodle-armed, but use a light pressure with their partner. I think this is a misguided attempt to be gentle with their partners: it’s usually gentlemanly types who do this. But the more you pull on...
One of my fantasies is to hold a class on little things that will improve your dancing 100%. I would do the following:
Fix everybody's frumpy, shlumpy posture.
Have almost everyone firm up their frame. One or two people in the class would need to be a little more flexible.
Have all the girls...
I've found that lessons in solo dances like ballet, belly dance and jazz are great complements to my social swing dancing; it helps me get from A to B with style. Knowing basic leading and following can only help as well. But these other dances aren't substitutes for learning swing. Lindy in...
I couldn't agree more. Almost all the amateurs who teach on the floor (that is, they grab partners and try to show them how to dance) are among the WORST dancers. I've never seen them do the Charleston right. Sometimes they end up giving advice to someone they discover later is a professional...
Yes, vintage styles work with thick hair. (My hairstylist tells me I have enough hair for two people.) But your hair has to be layered, and I find that smooth styles work better. All-over curls look like a blond afro on me.
I cleaned out my kitchen cupboard the other day: I took a bunch of plastic grocery bags to a library for patrons to carry their books home.
A few years ago, I cleaned out my office closet and ended up with a living room full of boxes I took to Goodwill. Within a few days, I couldn't even...
I saw this last night and loved it. Besides being so visually beautiful, I liked the morals of hard work, determination and doing the right thing.
The music was good, too.
I, for one, don't bother matching my coat to the rest of my outfit.
As for a brown hat in the summer, I guess it depends on the hat. Straw is great, but not all of us wear it. :)
A general suggestion from one homeowner to another: one project at a time.
Paint is economical, especially mis-tinted paint. Satin finish is easily cleaned.
A few of the songs on her album aren't right for a middle-aged woman, and some others don't play to her strengths. Yes, there's probably a revenge-of-the-nerds aspect to her popularity, but I think she sings certain types of songs like "I Dreamed a Dream" very well. Given her age, looks...
As others have mentioned, a lot of popular singers today are all wrapping and no gift. To my mind, many of the singers I hear in live local bands and community theater are better--way better--than many of today's bigger acts.
Something that gives me hope is the popularity of Susan Boyle...
A singer and I were talking last night about the direction that music has gone. "It's all vocal acrobatics and emoting way too much," she said. The song "Dancing Cheek to Cheek" with Louis Armstrong and Ella Fitzgerald was playing. "For a ballad that requires subtlety, nobody's doing it...
U.S. Made Women's Clothes
I recently ordered some tops and shorts and was pleasantly surprised to see that most of the items were U.S.-made, the fabric was thick and supple, the stitches were small, some of the items had double seams, and they seemed overall well-made. I can picture some of the...
I like that sailor tank-top, too. But tank tops tend to make me look like an East German shot putter unless they have a nipped waist...which this shirt doesn't.
As long as you dance with some good partners, it shouldn't make a difference. What I've seen with people who rarely change partners is that they hit a plateau at a low-intermediate level. I don't know about women, but men I've danced with who stick with one partner don't lead very well.
A Perfect Storm
I had a ton of fun in my beginner classes. Partly because I was lucky enough to have a good partner, and partly because the teachers taught leading and following. Part of it was the club where I went to learn and dance--I still remember instantly liking the place the first time...
Eric Hoffer was a stevedore and self-educated philosopher who wrote a book called The True Believer on the nature of mass movements and the people who join them. One of his observations is that certain types of people join mass movements, and the allure of a movement--losing oneself, moral...

I have one, and it's good quality. It's a year old, I've washed it a few times, and it looks as it did the day I bought it.
