Should I match my overcoat?

Bruce Wayne

My Mail is Forwarded Here
The question that i am putting forth is should I match my overcoat to the rest of my outfit? I am going to be in downtown Chicago on Tuesday & I was hoping to wear my Magnoli Casablanca Trench. However, I will also be wearing black & white spectators with gray slacks & my Optimo Oxblood.

Thoughts? Comments?

Thanx!!!

I wouldn't (and thus don't!) waste a lot of time trying to match. If it's chilly out and I'm dressed for business or the theatre, I grab a very-dark-charcoal overcoat and go (if I'm in browns or tweed, I've got a camel polo coat for this purpose). If it's rainy out, I grab a WWII-era trenchcoat and go. If I'm in jeans, it's my grandfather's Ike jacket.

Given the general assumption that one wears a trenchcoat to stay dry, I don't really see it "matching" poorly with an oxblood lid or grey trousers. After all, you'll be checking it when you reach your destination, no?

I do wonder, however, that if the weather calls for an overcoat... what in the heck are you doing with spectators on?!

I wouldn't dwell on it...not an issue as far as I'm concerned. I have a black wool topcoat and black trench coat for work, and other colors for non-work days, charcoal and tan, and even an oliveish brown trench that I really like.

If it's a beige trenchcoat you'll have a hard time finding something it doesn't match with. Therefore, don't worry about matching because it will most likely match anything you combine it with. Oxblood hat and grey trousers sound fine to me.

Well I wonder too because I don't have a proper fedora and want to buy one. (I always wear 8panel/gatsby/flatcaps)

The only vintage overcoats I have are a black 1940s ulster coat and an ike jacket.
So I think a brown fedora wouldn't match the black coat and a grey fedora wouldn't match the ike jacket(?). Maybe the coat is more important because I wear it more often. So I could go for the grey one?

Then again I have brown/beige spectators that would look better with a brown hat.[huh]

I think you'll see if you check the Great Spectators thread, that they are meant strictly as a summer shoe. They're the equivalent of a white shoe. Not that anyone is going to point their finger at you and say "Oooohh! White before Memorial Day!". But that's just the general rule of thumb. Unless it's a really balmy sultry day in Chicago in April.

Yes of course the spectators not with the black coat.

I wanted to try brown hat, red 40s tie, chinos, brown/beige spectators or something like this...in the summer. Do you think the Ike Jacket would fit? It's green and I don't have a clue what else to wear with it. At the moment I just wear it with jeans which doesn't look sooo vintage. More 50s like 40s, I think.

Won't you be wearing a straw hat in summer?

A brown hat, especially if it is fairly dark, just doesn't say "summer' to me.

I, for one, don't bother matching my coat to the rest of my outfit.

As for a brown hat in the summer, I guess it depends on the hat. Straw is great, but not all of us wear it. :)

I generally match my hat to my overcoat as it makes sense - it's pretty much all you see as outerwear, and you take both off at the same time.

The Casablanca tie, while it's decent, is a little loud, like walking down the street with a bouquet of flowers. If you have that Kopper Magnoli tie, i'd go with that, or an earth tone, to go with the trench coat. ;)
