I think one of those crest or logo threads posited that the switch from stars to leaf was around '52 or so, but there are numerous exceptions.
For example;
Captain, size is a key factor here as well. If you're a size 7 there is a lot more vintage bowlers to choose from. If you're a size 7 5/8 they are fewer and further between and command higher prices.
Charlie, "Royal" may be at the bottom of the Stetson quality scale but that hat is top quality in "looks"! When I picture the classic fedora in my mind it looks just like your Royal Stetson

Tony, do you know of anyone that has the sewing machine to attach unreeded sweats? I've heard Optimo but have never actually seen or heard of anyone that's had one done or re-attached.
Thanks guys! Fruno, I've found I only like the fedora side dents on hats with at least 5 3/4 open crowns and I don't go all the way front to back like one would with a cattleman crease on a cowboy hat.
I'm thinking not keeping them in a hot attic or damp basement would go a long way in preserving the hats, sweatband and all. A fair amount of vintage hats seem to have suffered this indignity.
