Sourcing Hat Bodies Wool, Straw, Blends?

Tim over at Purebeaver has been showing off some 20% beaver FEPSA blanks that I might have to jump on. I haven't inquired on pricing, but he is saying they can accommodate 7"x6"!

don't know. I am just commenting from the appearance of the felt in the above photos.

The dimensional cut brim has different widths on the sides than front to back. It's one of the defining features of the Indy hat. The original is believed to be 2 1/2" (2 5/8" according to some) width on the sides and 2 3/4" front and back. This modification to the stock Poet (or "Australian...

30 New Bond was not the original location, making this hat post 1985, IIRC. I tried to look up the location dates but for some reason couldn't find it again. vaguely Indy styled but felt looks somewhat coarse. Maybe wool? Not sure if that brim is dimensional either.

    Photos of hatters tools

I admire your willingness to jump in head first. If you get it worked out and feel like selling any blocks, I'd be interested! I have a #52 block on order from Randal. I'm quite happy with the build quality of his stuff, though his #51 profile doesn't match up to my vintage Stetson.

    Open Road/Shaping

you should more or less be able to get that look. The modern hats with pressed in creases are not the most shapeable, but I'd imagine most western hat shops have done such a shaping. This hat likely has a wider brim than the original pic. On men's hats, the bow is traditionally placed on the...

Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

Surmising from the "thirty seven years of manufacturing experience" described in the first pages, this catalog is from 1902. Inferring from the caption for other marks, "used in Soft or Stiff hats when specially ordered," it seems dealers could customize their stock somewhat beyond a store...

Ebay Hats: Victories, Defeats, Gripes & Items of Interest

it would be a maker's mark of some sort. These are sometimes done as embossments (or debossments) done with a metal die, and later with just a gold foil logo. In this case, I was talking about the Boss of the Plains logo pictured in this early 1900's Stetson Catalog: This logo was recreated...

That's it, I'm out. The ADS ARE RIDICULOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yeah, that's the rub. I didn't mind the ad at the top of the page. I can even deal with the floating ads at the bottom. But ads in the middle of posts is too much. I'd support a "contributing member" option if that's possible with this forum configuration.

    Penman Hats?

Short answer: no. Nobody has any insight into the situation on COW either. Some are speculating it is related to the upcoming Indiana Jones movie, this is just idle speculation from Indy fans. His wait list was getting fairly long so he may just be trying to catch up. Folks have also been...

    Stetson Sweat Stamps/ LOT XXXX

These hats are in other threads, but for posterity: 1922 Austral-like, BOP-adjacent No. 1 Quality, Lot 5066 I had assumed 1910's based on what I could find about the store imprint, but maybe not? Real Nutria Quality Boss Raw Edge, Lot 5895

I hate sewing sweatbands. I hate reeds!

My first one the reed tape shows a bit on one side but I try not to worry about it. I used the stitch awl method. Tim from Ally Kat/Pure Beaver advised to lay the hat on a table, then take a fabric chalk pencil and lay it flat on the brim, then go around and make your stitch marks. The radius...

    Stetson Open Road Straw

It's true I am a proponent of the vented shangtung ORs. I can't speak to the unvented shangtung hats. I don't think that would be my first choice. I would consider one of the Hemp ORs, certainly, but I already have a Panama one. I appreciate that I don't have to "baby" the shangtung OR...

    Hat Stores-a list

If we are talking about a vintage Borso from the old factory, I would suggest you pass the hat on to a new owner rather than carry out extensive modifications. If you've got a modern Borso with a gold applique, have at it. If you ship it out anywhere you are looking at at least $30 round trip...

Brim Trim - Will 1/8" Make a Noticeable Difference?

A few thoughts come to mind.... Richard Swales of Herbert Johnson (in)famously carried out brim trims with scissors. If it's good enough for the hatters to the British Crown, it's good enough for your $20 thrift store hat. You seem dead set on having those shorter proportions no matter what we...

For whatever it's worth (probably not much) the series of hats currently made by Borsalino and authorized by the Bogart estate have 6.5cm brims https://borsalino.com/en/women/fall/winter/the-bogart-by-borsalino-cut-2
