It seems like forever ago since we shot the raw footage....but the final edited cut of my instructional video covering the A to Z of hat making is very close to release. It will be marketed by HatCourses.com. A week's worth of footage, edited down to about 4 hours (to save you from watching...
I shipped this out yesterday, headed to eastern Canada...just in time for felt weather. 100% beaver Winchester felt in a mid brown. Matching brim binding with a 2" vintage French silk blend grosgrain on the crown.
Tight pinches and hard edges....4 3/4" crown front, rising to 5 1/2" on the...
How much too small is the hat? The felt looks to be in OK shape. If the hat has great sentimental value consider commissioning a restoration. If interested send me PM. I love restoring vintage hats.
It is called just 'the bow', the piece of ribbon that wraps the bow horizontally is called 'the keeper'. If you glue it on, the ghost of hat makers passed will come to your house and haunt you......forever!
5 stitches and it is done. You have a choice to do invisible stitches or if not...
I think that is part of the charm of linen......the crumpled look and tropical climes just seem to go together. The linen needs to have substance. I buy a top quality laundered linen that has a degree of heft but is buttery soft.
I am surprised that linen does not appear as one of your choices. Find a high quality laundered linen and have a suit made....a hot climate wardrobe needs to include at least one linen suit.
No rules, or at least you get to make them. Wear the hat as it suits your mood. Sometimes up, sometimes down......it all depends on my mood, and time/place.
Pictures would help us out. Cannot really make a comment without seeing the issue. Off the shelf hats are made in a production line manner and maybe your hat(s) were made by the new guy. The reed area of the sweat should sit a bit proud of the brim break as you don't want that area...
Here is the hat the second participant created. A Tonak velour rabbit felt in a jade green. A soft pink ribbon gave it a real feminine touch. 4" flat brim and an asymmetrical centre dent crown 4 3/4" at the front, no pinches. An exotic wild turkey feather to complete the look.
I had great fun this weekend running a hat making workshop for two wonderful ladies. They bring their creative ideas, they do the work, and I provide the instruction on the 'how'.
First hat is a Winchester western weight felt in black. 7 1/4" open crown, 4 1/4" brim. Brim is ironed...
Shipped this off a few days back. Nutria, dress weight felt, 160grams, Cobalt blue. I pounced it as thinly as I dared to soften/lighten it up.
2 1/2" brim, 4 3/4" crown at the pinch, 5" at the sides. Silver gray vintage grosgrain ribbon.
