I second the above thoughts. A great place to see vintage hats in action is to watch old movies. There are styles that would be more prevalent in certain decades but the world of hats has always been a wide one. My sweet spot for fedoras is a 6" no taper, open crown, 2 3/4" brim...maybe...
I second this idea. The Campdraft or the Fed IV are great 'starter' hats. Decent quality, great price, hard wearing. I would start there and wear it to get comfortable with the look. Then once you have the experience you can consider a custom hat as you will have a better idea of what...
Here is the third hat of the week from the same client. He had his Ebay purchases sent directly to me for an assessment and cleanup. This hat required very little, just a good brushing, some steam and a bit of touch up on the creasing. Client now has three fine Stetsons to add to his...
Depending on your size you may be best served looking for vintage online. You will pay for it but a good 1950's Stetson will get you what you seek. Or commission a custom hat and get exactly what you want, look, colour, feel, size and trimmings........
If you plan on continuing to collect hats it would serve you well to get your head shape determined. Head shape is about as important as the actual head measurement.
My guess is that you are a long oval. Most off the shelf hats are regular oval. So in order to get the right fit on a 7 1/4" head size you have to move up to a 7 3/8" to get the right dimension at the forehead. Then you end up with a gap at the temples that gives the appearance that the hat...
I shipped out these two Royal Deluxe Stetsons today. Not really a restoration as they are both in fine shape. But they were Ebay purchases the buyer had sent directly to me for a refresh. Just a good steam, brush and a flanging to straighten the brim and tighten up the cupping. All in all...
This fine looking fedora is headed out the door to Texas. 100% beaver, dress weight from FEPSA. Mid grey, tone on tone 6 ligne brim binding with a light tan crown ribbon. I like the colour combo, understated and classy.
That is my great concern when dealing with a client on line. I use the Flex Curve to check the shape of the head and thot process gives me a double check. I have caught customers out a few times and asked them to remeasure as their tape measurement does not match the diagram/dimensions from...
This one had a Stetson tip liner in it plus a Stetson logo's leather sweat band. It sure feels like a plastic shell as I can press on it, deform it and it snaps back. My thought is: a plastic shell with a sprayed on 'felting' material. It is old, as the ribbon is decent quality, not a...
Things tend to run in cycles and after not handling any restorations for a long while I have been inundated with 5 in last 2 weeks. Here is a well worn, well loved custom hat (Falcon Park) that the client wants revived. I cautioned him the hat was so sun damaged, worn at the pinch, the felt...
Here is one I mailed out yesterday. It is my "Country Gentleman" model. Ukraine rabbit at 160grams. Latigo leather on the band with my 'wolf paw' logo instead of a concho.
Here is a progress report on the red Borsalino in the shop for a restoration. Even though I babied the hat through the blocking, the felt was so thin at the pinch that it gave way and produced a hole.
I cut a piece of lighter milliner's grade felt in white and dyed it to match ,gluing it...
My brother, an Anglo, born on the west coast, emigrated to Quebec, became fully bilingual, married a local......he will forever remain an outsider. Those born in Quebec City consider themselves 'pure laine' (pure wool) and only they are truly Quebecoise. I met a middle aged fellow that ran...
What a hat manufacturer puts on the label and the actual measurement are sometimes at odds. But here on earth, a 59cm measure is always a 59cm measure.....unless using a Chinese tape measure.
I have an old Stetson Bowler that a client sent to me to restore. Turns out it is not really a felt hat. It is a plastic shell with a felt glued on top or felt fibres sprayed onto the shell. No real experience with Bowlers, don't own one. Have you seen this before? The crown/brim ribbon...
