Well I bought an Akubra Sydney on the last day of the noggintops sale, but I don't like the way it looks on me. I plan to send it back, but thought first I would see if anyone on the Lounge wants it at the old price. I am asking for what I paid plus actual shipping ($99.64 plus cost of shipping...
Look at these
Here's some photos of Honus Wagner, his ball cap looks along the lines of what you want.

A quick look turned up this retro fitted ball cap manufacturer - check out the cap for the 1896 Boston Beaneaters or the 1911 New...
I'd probably pack the bucket and wear the felt on the plane. But then I have a morbid fear of showing up at an event and finding that I'm underdressed. Then if I found my felt was too hot, I'd use that as an excuse to go shopping for a more appropriate hat. I bought my nice Panama that way on a...
No no no
No I am not a modernist, aching to tear down anything old. But I've frozen my butt off in lousy seats at Shea enough to dislike it forever. Shea is a bad stadium because it was designed badly, not because it's old - it's not even that old, really. Having been to new parks in Seattle...
yikes
Wow, struck out on hats and watching the Mets lose the home-opener on the same day, what a bummer. Yet another reason to tear down Shea Stadium (not that we need another reason)
Sorry about that
Sorry about that Skyvue, I thought I saw some nice Stetsons and whatnot there, I didn't check that closely once I found there was nothing in my size, as usual. :o
No website, no large hats
This is strictly an old-school operation - there is no website listed on their business card. I forgot to mention before, there aren't any extra large hats. There was a nice brown fedora and a pork pie in size 7-1/2, but nothing to fit my 7-3/4 head. I've never managed...
A menswear store in Astoria Queens NY is having a (real) going out of business sale. They have a hat dept. where everything is currently 50% off. There are about 50 hats, Stetsons, Stefano, etc., about 1/3 dress, 1/3 straw, 1/3 rain hats. There is also an old bench mount hat stretcher with...
My contributions so far
From Spatterdash's earlier thread, I came up with these:
A council of homburgs or a mob of homburgs
A fleet of boaters or a regatta of boaters
Oh, and I second the 'league of bowlers', that's great!
And from the animal world, my favorites are 'a charm of...
Yes to poplar
I used poplar extensively as finish molding in my carpentry days and it is readily available at home centers. Don't be afraid to use the cheaper stuff that is glued up from multiple small pieces - the more expensive, wider boards will tend to warp much more and the block is a...
Cool tool
Betty, I like that Edward Scissorhands hat sizer! Often on old tools there is an ability to calibrate them. If that little teardrop-shaped indicator can be moved, you might be able to adjust it so that it reads the proper hat size. Failing that, you could put some white tape with...
I noticed the coinage...
...and I like it: a St. Valentine's Day Massacre of fedoras is the cat's pajamas. I think 'a riot of pork pies' conjures a good image as well. I hadn't replied yet because I was working on your question re: the best term for a grouping of Homburgs (and it is spelled...
Yup
Growing up south of Seattle, my exchange was "ALpine 5", far superior to my best friend's "BAldwin 8", or at least that how I saw it. Better a tree than some dead guy. Exchanges were in use until the early 70s, although some may have been hold over of people (like my family) unwilling to...
Nice lid
I think you did well on that lid, it looks quite nice - I would definitely try wearing it with the back snapped up just to see how it looks. As far as photos go, I believe you need 15 posts on the Lounge before being able to put photos inline.
Go custom!
See, if you get a nice custom hat, then your Fed DL will be your inexpensive lid and you can wear it without compunction, knowing you've left your very valuable custom hat at home on those blustery days. If this sounds silly, just hang around - this idea makes sense to me now that...
Looking closer at the fifth photo, it looks like someone removed the liner, cut out the Stetson logo and glued it to the crown of the hat, another clue that it's a hatchet job. That and the fact that the chin cord bulges under the sweat band in undignified fashion.
The leather tab could be...
Could be costume piece
That hat may have been modified for use in theater or film. Just a thought.
And Tinman is right, us big-headed types just get more felt for our money, er, except when it comes to vintage - then you mini-domes win out.
