Trial run I mentioned this on another post, and I think it might help here too. Get some cheap ribbon in a width you're considering and mock up a temporary. You could tape or stitch the ribbon to itself and slip it over the existing one. Maybe you could mock up a bow too, try various colors... -

Trial run I prefer a thin ribbon, but DHerman this is what I'd do. I'd get a length of inexpensive wide ribbon and put it temporarily on the hat over the existing ribbon. You could just tape the temp ribbon to itself unobtrusively, maybe even fake up a bow. Then I'd neurotically pose around... -

A little loose on me Good question - it was a tad loose on me, which I have to say doesn't happen that often. It is slightly larger than my modern 7-3/4 Stetson Chatham.
