Second that
Yes Orgetorix, I agree that's a great lid and look - I much prefer the band on your Cavanagh to the traditional red-black band of the standard boater.
My coping strategy
Maybe this will help those with self-consciousness issues, which I have from time to time just like everybody else. I've been using this ruse for years and it works well.
When somebody asks "why are you so dressed up", I have a ready answer:
If I'm at work, I say "well...
P.S.
I forgot to give my vote - I like the hat the way it is - those thin ribbons with the dangly ends add a certain whimsy, or savoir faire, or something, whatever, I just like it, OK? Back to grading papers....
Trial run
I mentioned this on another post, and I think it might help here too. Get some cheap ribbon in a width you're considering and mock up a temporary. You could tape or stitch the ribbon to itself and slip it over the existing one. Maybe you could mock up a bow too, try various colors...
Well said
I tried a 2-1/2" brim Stetson Windham on Sunday, and looked like I was about to take flight (same goes for the Akubra Sydney I ordered recently). The Borso Alessandria made me look like a circus clown. The 2-1/4" brim Stetson Ashland made me look like I walked out of a movie, even...
Nice review
Thanks for the review. I agree about visiting vs. internet. I went by Bencraft Hats in Brooklyn this weekend. Within 5 minutes I had tried on and ruled out half a dozen hats I'd been drooling at online for months - they just didn't look right on me (they were the Eleganza, Stetson...
Sweet lid - lucky dog
That's one sweet lid - my first hat was a Cavanagh edge thrift store find as well. Of course that was over 30 years ago and I wore it out, like a dope. Wish I'd known how valuable it was (or would be) - no lounge then...
Great first post, and your photographs are...
Why, thank you
I may have to change my name to "Mr. Teardrop" or something similar. I realized that every hat I own has a teardrop crown. I guess it just says "hat" to me. Although I did try a derby the other day and it looked pretty good - my wife didn't even want to see me put on a boater...
Submitted for your perusal - just a link, not suggesting anything untoward, of course...

Trial run
I prefer a thin ribbon, but DHerman this is what I'd do. I'd get a length of inexpensive wide ribbon and put it temporarily on the hat over the existing ribbon. You could just tape the temp ribbon to itself unobtrusively, maybe even fake up a bow. Then I'd neurotically pose around...
Very, very nice!
Chinatown is my all-time favorite movie - you've done a good job of pulling that hat back from the past - very impressive. Now if you could only get Jack to sign your liner, as Jake Gittes, of course....
Similar shape in straw
If you like the shape of the Bear Creek (I know I do), then you might also like the Stetson Retro Panama:
http://www.hats-plus.com/detail.aspx?ID=457
It has a medium 2-1/2" brim and looks like a fairly low crown which I prefer. If this hat came in size 2x I'd have...
Wow
The vertical stripes on the SMU hatbands just about gave me a seizure - ay caramba! But an impressive display none the less.
I happened to run across this Tesi Italian boater on the Bencraft site - reasonably priced, they're a FL sponsor and it actually comes in my size. I plan to try...
Probably warm
Well it's sovereign quality and looks to be the same shape as the Stetson Chatham, but with a leather band instead of ribbon. I have a Chatham and I would say it will be too warm for summer here in New York. But if you were in the mountains, I think it would be OK. Having said...
Mtechthang, good point about additives to coffee - I don't think anyone had a Thermos full of latte back in the seventies. The hydrogen peroxide method sounds like the best approach short of a naptha bath.
This takes me back
When I was in college, I took the Amtrak cross country NYC to Seattle and back at Christmas. At one point, I was napping with my gray Cavanagh (yes, with eponymous edge) on the seat beside me. I woke up to find the teardrop crown a little tiny swimming pool, full of coffee...
Weird and cool
That's outstanding - I'd love that hat. Are those concentric rings, or is it one big spiral stitch? It seems like it would be difficult to do that detail stitching without a dedicated machine.
Say yeth to pith
OK, bad joke, but I really was going to suggest a pith helmet. VHS has many types - note you can dip them in the water to really cool off. There's a low-cost straw version for $20, like mail carriers wear, I think. Should look OK with a scout uniform...
A little loose on me
Good question - it was a tad loose on me, which I have to say doesn't happen that often. It is slightly larger than my modern 7-3/4 Stetson Chatham. I think the fit strip will take care of it. My understanding is that Akubras tend to shrink with time, although I have no...
