Nice word: Gibus = opera hat
Alex - that's a great word - I looked it up on my favorite online dictionary "www.onelook.com", which looks up your word in dozens of online dictionaries.
Here's the result, from http://dictionary.reference.com/search?q=gibus&r=66

Scout Felt Hat Stiffener
Saw this on my visit, didn't buy and have never used it as my Stetsons are fairly new so fairly stiff - it's the 4th item from the bottom.

Here you go Bill - put a couple of clear coats of epoxy resin on this baby, and you've got a bicycle helmet with some style:

Then you have to get to work on a 3-piece suit made from breathable...
Doesn't spandex degrade pretty quickly? - within a couple of years, anyway. Might be an issue as hats are exposed to a good bit of UV radiation (unless you live in Seattle, of course)
I took the feather and pin off my Stetson Chatham immediately, I think it looks better that way. I put them on my el-cheapo $17 corduroy fedora to give it a little class, which was modestly successful.

Interesting note on long-term effects. In spite of my post above, the main reason I snap the brim up when taking off a hat, is because it's so stylin' to put on the hat, snap down the brim and adjust it by sliding both hands out from the center to the sides - I remember my grandfather doing this...
Love the odd Knox
That color combo is weird but cool. Now, quick, get that hat off the bed please, it gives me the willies.... (it's bad luck, you know)
Read through the listing - lower down it's written "BILTOMORE HOUSE" - maybe it's actually supposed to be "BALTIMORE HOUSE"? Could that make any sense?
Less expensive option
This is a less expensive option in a straw fedora:

If this came in my size, I'd have one by now.
I'm sure it could never measure up to Panama Bob's product, though.
Good move
I think that's a good move, I bet you like it. As far as staying away from this place, good luck with that, let us know how it works out....
Have you visited here yet?: The Siren's Song
I see you've chosen classic teardrop hats - this is my preference as well. In fact, I have this hat:

But I bought it when it was on sale and the base price was lower too. Many on the lounge prefer Akubra to Stetson, but it's hard to find...
Welcome to the obsession, er, lounge. As a start, you could browse around VHS (villagehatshop.com) to get a taste of what's out there.

You'll have to decide whether you want fur felt or wool felt for your first hat. Generally speaking, fur looks...
Sorry Kabuto, the article you cite does not support the conclusion you have drawn. I don't think the article has enough depth to support any conclusion, to be honest.
The hats at noggintops are sized S - XXL. The buckle lets you size it more exactly to what you want. VHS has them too, but those come in two sizes S/M and L/XL (they cost more, too). It has a fabric coolmax sweat that does wick perspiration, but I don't think the straw will wick. When it's...
Rick, I have to say that cotton hat looks like it would be brutal in the heat, particularly down yonder in Dixie. I have a cotton seersucker suit which is not comfortable in the heat - a tropical wool suit is much better. If you like that shape, there's the Henschel Breezer which looks to be...
From a physics standpoint, I would say that when the brim is snapped up all the way around, it is in a relaxed state. When you snap the front down to wear it, the 'spring' of the brim is in a stretched state. If left this way all the time, the outer edge of the brim would tend to elongate...
Manhattan Wardrobe Supply
You're in NYC, so I recommend Manhattan Wardrobe Supply at 245 W. 29th (bet 7th and 8th Aves), 8th floor. Here's what they've got listed on the web:

I went there to get a stretcher (item 916), and wound up also...
Good question
I think price would depend on quality of the ribbon and execution of the bow. Having said that, Warbaby I would suggest a system where standard high-grade hatters ribbon is used, with an elastic section hidden behind the bow. If the ribbon was nice grosgrain and the bow had some...
