I want to get a spot remover and a hatter's sponge to clean up my ebay and trashbin finds. Maybe a brush. Then I think maybe there are other things I should get, but I don't know enough to know what, or where. Would you please tell me WHAT to get and WHERE to get it?

Manhattan Wardrobe Supply

You're in NYC, so I recommend Manhattan Wardrobe Supply at 245 W. 29th (bet 7th and 8th Aves), 8th floor. Here's what they've got listed on the web:

http://www.wardrobesupplies.com/store/m2_mjsupp.html

I went there to get a stretcher (item 916), and wound up also buying a hat stand, a brim brush (cheapest price going), a hat sponge and Scout spot remover. They also have racks of sewing supplies (I managed to find a very large thimble finally) and many racks of weird theatrical stuff (fake blood, wigs, etc. etc.).

They have some other cleaning supplies as well, but I'm not that educated in their use. When you're there, you can at least read the labels which is better than buying things sight-unseen on the internet. It was a lot of fun looking around there for an hour or so, so I highly encourage a visit. I may go back for the hand-held Jiffy E Steamer they sell which looks nice.

PS - nice avatar - the Spirit was always my favorite

Check the Felt Hats Basics sticky., there is some good information on cleaning supplies in that thread. I've used Scouts Hat Cleaner, Scouts Spot Remover, naptha, and a sponge. On bad stains, I haven't found anything that works for me so far.
