Nice
I haven't seen that before, I like it. Of course, that depends on how elliptical the hat happens to be when the measurement is taken; I would imagine it's fairly close. But to accurately give the hat size, a circumference has to be accurate to at least 3/8", which is less than 2% of a 22"...
That's it
Yep, that's the one, 5". I bought mine from Noggintops, however. I prefer a lower crown - the 4" Stetson teardrop is my favorite. I'm of average height with a large head - so I try not to overemphasize my cranial endowment by wearing overly large crowns.
Interesting
I like the wind trolley - I wish mine had had one. Anyway, the popping bash wasn't the deal-breaker for me. I know some have fixed that minor problem with a watering. For me the crown was too high and the brim snapped down too low in front of my eyes - that's why I let it go. I...
Reading the recent thread by Dumbjaw, who is the latest victim of a measurement-challenged ebay seller got me thinking. I was thinking that the easiest way for a clueless yokel to measure the size of a hat is to measure the circumference around the OUTSIDE of the hat, where the ribbon meets the...
Some additional info
If you're just starting in felt, I think it makes sense to pay less and buy factory or vintage until you know exactly what you like. Then later on you can pony up the money for a custom hat. Re: some earlier suggestions:
I have a Stetson Ashland in dark brown - the brim...
Late to the party
Just found this thread - love the green hats, especially that Whippet. For those of you out there like me with big noggins, who have little chance of ever finding a vintage lid your size (much less a green one), the Stetson Chatham in Sage green is a nice option. I find the...
Very nice
Excellent - that makes me want to talk to Art about making me a 100% beaver fur felt custom canoe, with matching grosgrain ribbon gunwales....
I almost forgot, the felt canoe would of course require a birch-bark paddling jacket and hat...
Nice
I barely even look on ebay anymore, there's almost never anything in 7-3/4. That bowler looks pretty much the cats pyjamas - if you don't care for it once it arrives, I volunteer to take it off your hands for cost plus - I'd love to have a bowler for formal dress a few times a year in NYC...
Feh
I have to say I think that is a god-awful waste of a really large piece of beautiful wood to make something that is basically a visual gimmick. I'd be more impressed if the hat was made out of a few ounces of veneer carefully crafted into a truly wearable hat. Hacking up a 50 pound burl to...
That would make me want to print out a page advertising the hat for its actual cost, then hand it to him and telling him he lost a customer for good. But I suppose that would be petty and vindictive....
Sweet
Man that is a sweet lid! I wonder if there is a model name inside the sweatband somewhere, as Sovereign is the felt quality designation. I think an untouched hat with a mode edge is a rare beast - I'm green with envy, etc.
Yikes
I'm not sure about the first three, but I hope any shipment of that last one will be seized at Customs by the hat fashion police and sent directly to an incinerator. Yikes.

If it's dealer's choice, then I'd go ahead and assume she meant Sean Connery. Not that I look like him, mind you, but he IS much cooler than the other two.
Yesterday wearing a Joe Fedora - that's a polypro hat woven to look like Milan straw fedora, it even has a chin strap over the back of the brim - I got "Hey Godfather". This is from someone old enough to remember when hats were daily wear. Yeesh.
Douglas!
I say get the Douglas, it's a terrific looking hat, for some reason I prefer it to the Campdraft. It's on my list (in fawn) right after the Stetson Nostalgia with bound brim comes out. If you get it, I hope you'll post pictures of the silver belly version so we can see the ribbon...
New coupon
Received from Village Hat Shop this morning:
"Within the past couple weeks we have received our higher quality hats for fall, brands like Stetson and Borsalino. These winter felts can be expensive so here’s a plan to make them more affordable. Buy a $100 hat or a combination of...
A classic
That ribbon is pretty special, particularly with the matching brim binding - you asked, so I have to say 'if it ain't broke, please don't fix it...'
Art: I smoked for 20+ years and quit in 2000. As my wife will attest, I was a crabby pain in the ass for at least 9 months. At the time I was computer programming quite heavily, and was taking frequent smoking breaks. When I quit, the breaks would drive me nuts with no smokes. I wound up walking...
My Stetson Milan is quite stiff. If you crushed it, I think it would be destroyed, but it is pretty strong. It is also a fairly hot hat - the polypro hat I just got feels much cooler. I don't have a Panama, so can't compare them directly, but they look cooler FWIW.
