I tried the Windham last winter - I agree that the contrasting brim ribbon was not to my liking. I liked the picture, but found I didn't particularly care for the bash once I had it on my head. Also, it was my impression that the crown was somewhat tapered - in the end I wound up buying...
New hat - Faux Joe
I recently received my new Joe Fedora from noggintops. It's a woven polypro hat, with a pseudo Milan weave. It's foldable and impervious to water. I have a Riverz Delta by the same maker, which is my kayaking hat - useful, but not a stylish item. I bought the Joe for hiking...
The wider binding on those 2 old hats does look perfect, so I guess I prefer it, especially in the matching color. I also agree there's no particlar reason a wider vs narrower binding would put off the hoi polloi.
I like the thin brim binding - I think it may look more in scale with the narrower ribbon that Besdor requested. Hey Besdor - how about that white lining and brown sweatband? They look great, don't they? hint, hint.... Actually, the Ashland I bought from Bencraft last winter has that combination...
Different styles
The Bencraft version of the Nostalgia will be different than the stock version at getahaton.com. To the best of my recollection, the Bencraft version will have a 2-1/2" brim with 6 ligne edge binding, along with a slightly narrower ribbon, I think it was 19 ligne vs. 22 ligne...
Why thank you, I'll take that prize in cash or custom lids please....
BTW, I just double-checked: you can alternatively measure the outside circumference in centimeters and then subtract 2.5 cm to give the proper Euro sizing. Cheers
New sizing method - try this
I had a weird idea for a measuring method and just checked it out on all of my hats:
Using a fabric tape, measure around the outside circumference of the hat at the bottom of the ribbon - go right over the bow, pin, whatever.
Subtract 1 inch, then divide by...

New hat
A timely post - I just ordered a new rain/hiking/kayaking hat about 15 minutes ago. I got the flyer from Noggintops about 10 minutes before that. It's a techstraw (i.e. polypro - water has no effect on it) hat called the Joe Fedora:

I've...
And now ---- back to the hats!
Stetson Hempstead - contemporary, unlined, pretty stiff, nice C-crown with 2-3/8" brim (my best size) - I've since cleaned the minor sweat staining on the ribbon, which is 5/8" wide with brown stripes on white...
These thumbnail pics should be clickable:
Hey Mike - this brings me back, but not in a good way. I was in the big funeral home on the main drag in Renton WA after my father passed away in 1999, taking care of some arrangements. There were two memorial services taking place that day - not a suit jacket or tie was in evidence among the...
Try Bencraft
When my wife bought me a hat from Bencraft a while back, the nice old guy at the register pulled a box from somewhere and asked if I wanted a feather in it - I said no, but I guess there's extra feathers kicking around there - so maybe drop Besdor a line....
Superstition alert
Hey Matt, please take those hats off the bed! Don't you know that's bad luck? My mother would let you hear it if she saw that. Just looking at that pic gave me the heebie-jeebies, right after I stopped laughing, of course....
I don't mean to pry (yeah, right) but was this one of Besdor's samples? I'm assuming it is due to the bound edge and the width of the ribbon. I thought the Nostalgia was going to be Sovereign grade, a step up from Royal...
Nice choice
Hey Brett - our tastes really are a lot alike - the Borso Roma is the straw I like best on the Bencraft site. The dark color sounds interesting - is the color in the picture the cognac color? There's also a hat called the Comet by Tesi that looks almost identical to me, except it...
That's my kind of lid - very nice. Did you notice the texture in the ribbon? You can see it where it wraps the bow too. Hard to tell the color, even, from those photos, though.
2-1/2" sounds Jake to me as well, esp. with binding, even though so far I have chosen smaller brims. Caribou is a color I'm missing, so that's what I'm interested in.
I agree with the comment about brim width and crown height working together to make a hat harmonious, yet I never hear people...
Sounds good to me. I say whatever looks more old-fashioned for the edge binding, so probably the wider one. Am I right in assuming it is gray binding on gray felt, with a black ribbon?
PS I can't believe people are passing on the hat for want of an eighth of an inch without even looking at a...
