Sometimes you get what you pay for - often this is the case with suits. A suit that costs less than $200 will be of poly blend or cheap wool and will wrinkle like, well, a cheap suit. I am an academic, so don't have loads of money either. I shop at Syms because I can get a good quality wool suit...
Borsalino! You're killin' me, I've never seen one at the Syms in NY.
It's true what you say about weird styles and sizes. They have portly, short, athletic, from size 36 up to 50 I think. I have so many suits at this point that it's the non-standard colors and styles that I look for now - and...
I would advise this particular hipster-dufus to remove his gloves before venturing into Queens or the Bronx. Not to mention that chain is probably going to leave a mark on his $1370 jacket, yeesh....
By wide oval I guess that means tending towards circular? Interesting how few of the pictures show the style master in a hat - maybe someone should be blaming the demise of the lid on Grant, not Kennedy, 'cause he just looked so damn good without one....
That's a tough combination. For the past few years I've bought most of my suits at Syms at Park & 54th, sometimes at the downtown branch. Their usual prices are pretty good. Twice a year, in January and July they do their 'Bash' which takes another 30% off the regular prices. In January I did...
I'd worry that replacing the brim binding might affect the brim shape in a bad way. A little color fading just says vintage to me - I wouldn't risk a misshapen hat for the sake of a new-looking ribbon.
You're in the right neighborhood
Here you go, for the hat lover who already has absolutely everything else:

A fez and TWO smoking caps - dig the prices on those lids - through the roof, but you could get it to keep your coke...
Yes, by all means, starting off with a Campdraft is a great idea. It has the wide bound brim and felt that's robust enough to take multiple bashing in stride. Plus you (the OP) are already in Oz, so it will be a great value. It's got to be one of the top 3 hats on the Lounge. It even has a thin...
Those are marketed as being similar to the hats Depp wears - I don't think they're claiming to be the actual hat he owns. For the (high) price, you might as well kick in the extra dough and get a fully custom lid - I mean, as long as you're wishing, why not wish for a VS made just for you?
PS...
If the Stetson Retro came big enough, I would have one, it looks great.
This is a nearly indestructible poly straw hat that I've had for a year:

It rolls up and can be dunked/cleaned, etc. It doesn't feel like plastic, more like slightly floppy...
Actually I think the new Whippet is a Chatham with a bound edge (same size/shape as the Downs, but Sovereign instead of Royal quality felt). But still, it's just a new version of an existing (nice) hat.

To the OP - I found this page - the...
Yep
That Stetson lining is nice. I don't think I want to see anything specific in a liner, just a level of craftsmanship that says someone gave a damn how the inside of my hat looks. This Stetson Tehachapi Loop (picture from Aaron's Hats) is really nice also - it looks like someone put some...
Thanks Tomasso---
I didn't really spell it out, but measuring your face is pretty easy - get an easy-to-read ruler and look at your mug in the mirror. Another useful metric when sizing hats from photos is the interpupillary distance (I've been dying to use that word in a sentence for years...
Sorry about this, really
You asked for it, and I can't resist:
Buy one for yourself, or go whole hog, buy 'em by the gross and sell to drunk fans to recoup your investment:

Hey...
It's relative
The actual measurement is not as important as the size of the hat relative to the face and head of the wearer. Using calipers, I find the crown height is about the same as the distance from the pupil of the eye to the chin of Bugsy. So your hat's crown should be the same size as...
One more: "The St. Damo Lid" (The "Stuff that Dreams are made of" - maybe too far to go for a name that you'll be explaining forever).
Ditto what Univibe said on the deep bash - looks great - the new pictures are good too, that's a great lid.
Well, you could call it 'the Dingus' which is how Spade refers to the bird, but that might sound somewhat, er, pejorative. Or you could get obscure and call it 'La Paloma', as that hat is truly 'on fire'... :eusa_doh:
It's a great hat, I mostly want one, final verdict to depend on in-focus...

Yep, you can see the seal (his...
