Smartwool doesn't really itch, not sure what they do to the Merino wool. I use it as insulator garments when kayaking - much better and more breathable than fleece. The Temple should be fine - if you like the style and it works for you, it doesn't matter if it's a dress hat or not. There is also the Stetson Bear Creek, with the same felt quality as the Temple, but with a sweat band designed to wick sweat, and a leather band which is outdoorsy...
