I've gotta agree with Dr. S. - Akubra are so cheap right now they're hard to resist. But I'm not going to throw out my Stetsons (5 and counting), nor my 20 year old, too-small Christy's. They're all quite different, and there's no need to pick a winner, is there? The more brands out there, the...
Well, I guess I nailed it, as you already have the hat I suggested. I'm glad to hear you like it, as the Marlborough seems very similar - I went back and forth with the Epsom, but the bound brim swayed me, and I am also trying to work up to slightly wider brims (I have two 2-1/4" brims already)...
Mr. Paladin, you're a natural in the bowler - you could wear it daily, I would say.
I'm with Nick D., I would have to try one on before buying. I just ordered a fedora from hornetshats, and it was very tempting to get a Christy's bowler. I know it would fit (an issue for vintage), but have...

Well, the porkpie might not be for you (or me, for that matter), but there are a couple of Jaxon hats that might fit the bill:

Bogart, 2-3/8" brim:

I'm with Gene and Queue on this one. I now almost always accent my navy suits with brown belt and shoes. I would go with the tan hat, especially if it was a daytime event - tan looks good in the sun. Also, as you're in the south, you may tend to acquire lighter colored suits as time goes on...
Just to be pedantic, US hat size is head circumference divided by Pi. 22-1/2 inches is more like a size 7-1/8. You are blessed with a normal size head and can (and should) take advantage of all the vintage lids out there in your size.
In my experience, a thin string will give a measurement...
Hats make lighting an actor's face a problem. Looking at the stills, Connery (who knows how to wear a hat) often has a shadow around his eyes. The director of photography may have been the instigator of the hayseed angle on Costner's hat, to show his eyes unimpeded. And ditto the comments on...
Update
Well I finally made up my mind. I just ordered a Stylemaster in acorn and a Capricorn poly straw in gray from EA, and separately ordered a Christy's Marlborough from Hornetshats. Hornets said their navy color is distinctly blue, which is what I'm looking for. I hate to wait 3 months for...
Great minds think alike
xigxag - thanks for posting those comparison pics, they fully answered some nagging questions I had on relative proportions. Not to mention that excellent colored liner on the Stylemaster - I prefer it to the red in a big way. I think the two are close enough to both...
I just ordered a Stylemaster (acorn) and a Capricorn (gray) from EA. Sam went the extra mile and is getting Akubra to make the Capricorn in 62 which wasn't available before - nice service. Previously I've ordered from Noggintops (1 Akubra, a couple others too) and they're very good, and quite quick.
Thanks
Amen, thanks Portolan for seeming more hat-daffy than me - I just ordered three hats in the last half hour.
Is this the steamer you bought?:

I saw this in the store, and wondered how well it worked. It would be nice to...
That's funny, yesterday I was thinking about asking EA to have Akubra put a CD thin ribbon and wind trolley on an acorn fawn Stylemaster. Personally, I think I need the lower crown, narrower brim and some taper, but I too like a thin ribbon. The result might be nice, or it might be a Franken-hat...
No worries on the time delay - thanks for replying. It sounds like the hat is acting as a black (blue?) hole, sucking up all available light and interfering with photography. Or something. Too bad about it being so dark - I guess the ribbons are very dark blue as well.
I have been thinking...
Maybe this one?
Ortega - I just ran across the Porkpie from Christy's, up to size 63, which is about size 7.9, not sure it's big enough - it's the fifth one down on this page.

The source?
Going to an authoritative (English) source, here are the definitions from the Compact Oxford English Dictionary:
trilby
• noun (pl. trilbies) chiefly Brit. a soft felt hat with a narrow brim and indented crown.
— ORIGIN from the heroine of George du Maurier’s novel Trilby...
Yep
Yep, Nick's got it. I'm size 7-3/4 and have the model you're talking about. I have the 7-1/4 model and it will fit inside a hat several sizes too small for me and will reach a little bigger than my size in case I want to overstretch it a little. That size should work you as well.
On...
I'm having the same mental battle. I'm deciding between a Campdraft in taupe fawn vs. a Stylemaster in acorn fawn. The truth is I wear a suit or jacket virtually every day, so the Stylemaster makes more sense as I perceive it to be more of a dress hat. As an aside, I am medium height (5'8") with...
Yep
I agree with no vents - I'm a no-vent guy, and don't seem to have much trouble getting into my pockets. I like the way the jacket drapes when I slouch around with my hands in them. Plus, you've got to give Douglas credit for knowing what does and does not look good on himself.
As to...
I know Bencraft (lounge sponsor) has quite a few models that go up to size 8 and higher, but there's no special page - maybe drop them an email or phone call to see what they have.
Village Hat Shop and Delmonico Hatters both have dedicated pages for big-head sizes, but the pickings will be...
