I've seen that before . . .
Ah, here it is: http://www.mens-hats.com/IBS/SimpleCat/Shelf/ASP/Hierarchy/010301.html. I'm guessing the more expensive versions are branded as Borsalino, the lesser ones as Biltmore. Neither of them would have made the hat, of course.
Sardou.
Not the greatest choice if you already know you can't handle monkeys. Every time I see a Congressional hearing on TV, I'm reminded of "Walking with Dinosaurs" --- you know, the scenes where powerful beasts with small brains stomp and storm all over the place before tearing more highly evolved...
True, but remember that MacHeath/Mackie Messer/Mack the Knife was London's principal crime lord. For guidance as to hat etiquette, I think I'll stick with Emily Post and suchlike!

OK, I've been wondering . . .
From a hatmaking perspective (and ignoring the histories of the two styles), is a bowler simply an un-bashed Homburg? Or are they two different hats?

Cheer up Lady P
That last comment is typical of those who have tried and failed to find a hat that fits well over curlers (the large pink plastic variety). I'm sure she would have cooed over your hat if Jen/Brad/Lindsey/Cameron or any other of this week's tabloid idols had been wearing one...
Panama, definitely . . .
I remember once reading somebody's observation that the only person who ever looks good in a Greek fisherman's cap is a Greek fisherman. That exaggerates a bit, but I agree with the basic point: more of them fail than succeed.

Who's spoofing whom??
Convinced that Abramoff looked ridiculous in trench coat and fedora, Braden Keil (the reporter for the second article) bought a coat and hat mimicking Abramoff's and wound up looking even sillier than Abramoff. Amazing!!

Getting There . . . Getting There . . .
Out here on the frontier (Brooklyn), I do see more and more hats.
Sadly, only a small fraction of those being worn by the suit-and-overcoat set are true dress hats of the types that would go with the coats. Instead, lots of safari hats...
Easy!
Grey suit, preferably close to charcoal. Virtually any blue tie will go with grey + pink, so long as the blue is "true" or veers slightly toward the purple end. Avoid aqua and other green/blues.
Black is OK with pale pinks, but gets a bit Vegas if the pink is too rich.
Have a...
Tie it. Always.
To my eye, a buckled belt on a trenchcoat looks very uptight. It's the difference between Bogart and a low-level French police official.

Bencraft
Sorry to hear about your Bencraft experience. I've had good luck with them (plus I like to spend my money at home in Brooklyn).
BTW, Besdor, at which store do you hang your hat (as it were)?
I agree about JJs, but they are noticeably pricier. And what's the fun in a trip to...
Hmmm . . . Tricky . . .
Marc has it right: a camel hair polo coat is the epitome of daytime fashion, combining a certain informality (the exaggerated cuffs, the belt, the patch pockets) with an undeniable and slightly roguish "dash". I'm told that, in their original role on the sidelines of a...
Slipping into the Lounge before last call . . .
Does anyone happen to know WHY Oxford banned the wearing of knickers? Did Cambridge as well? After all, both Edwards (VII and VIII) had been photographed in them, so they can't have been viewed as scandalous per se.
Just a guess, but...
NoNoNoNo!
Keep it or sell it, but don't destroy what it is in hopes of making it what it's not. A vintage hat deserves better. (Can you tell I'm married to a historic preservationist?)
As others have suggested, it may just be a question of getting used to the hat.
Personally, I think...
Amen to that!
Indeed, how could one NOT check out Brooklyn, the storied borough of lore and legend? And of Bencraft Hatters!
Sardou,
A Brooklyn immmigrant, but at home nonetheless
Oh and by the way . . .
If this hat is intended to go with a specific coat, bring the coat. What's below the neck can strongly affect the appearance of what's above.

Local Lore
Living in New York, maybe I can help with some local detail.
JJ on Fifth Avenue is an independent, old-fashioned hat shop that deals the various lines you refer to, as well as Biltmore. That said, their "flagship" line is Borsalino. Loungers have also said nice things about the...
