Those of you who didn't like the Times' story might like these better, motivated by Jack Abramoff's now famous black-trenchoat-and-black-fedora-for-court outfit:

(this one might require a password to get; it's free, and there's a free program somewhere you can download to avoid the need for this)
Some tidbits:
1. the consensus is that Abramoff's black overcoat and black hat went way overboard in the sinister look.
2. Rat pack nostalgia is bringing fedoras back into fashion:
"Many fashion designers and department stores are jumping on the rat pack bandwagon, so expect to see a lot more fedoras in the near futurs. 'There is definitely this Rat Pack movement happening again,' says Michael Macko, men's fashioni director at Saks Fifth Avenue, whose latest campaign is labeled 'The Saks Pack,' and was shot in Miami at the classic Deco hotels."
3. Women like a man in a hat: the Post's reporter got a black trenchcoat and hat from Brooks Bros. 5th Ave. store (i.e. the new one, at 53rd St., not the old one at Madison Ave. I visited that had no hat dept. to speak of), and went trolling down the avenue: "I quickly notice that I was getting a lot of double takes from people as I strolled up Sixth Avenue. Maybe ladies find this cross between a Rat Packer, and Boris Badenov fedorable. One attractive woman smiled as she walked by and said, 'hello.'"
The hard-copy version has photos of some famous gangsters or actors in hats (Capone, Bogie, Robinson, Cameron Diaz in a turquoise fedora).
