Seems sensible to me . . .
Since the soup/sauce/gravy will inevitably find the tie anyway, one might as well use the tie to protect the sweater! :) :p :)

Business Suits? HELL NO!!
We do not favor this combination here in the cutured Northeast. Even though most boot-wearers are not ranchers, we remain nervous about what those boots may have stepped in. Stick to wingtips.

Speaking of "At Home" Entertaining
That's my understanding as well. Wearing the velvet stuff (jacket, slippers) is solely the prerogative of the host, at least after the era of ALL the men changing into smoking jackets for an after-dinner cigar in the smoking/billiards room...
Oh My!
My dear Daisy,
Not to worry: there are already plenty who have plenty to say about fedoras. But your photo makes clear that there is little you don't already know about choosing and wearing hats! Brava!

Okay . . .
That's what I came up with while pondering this question a few weeks back. But it makes me wonder why that's a useful number. In effect, it's the diameter of a round hat of a given circumference. But (finished) hats aren't round. Did this approach to sizing begin as a way to...
"Full" Disclosure
Bear in mind that "classic" trench coats (ie Burberry and similar) are cut VERY fully. Unless you are quite powerfully built, you may want to go down a size so as not to be completely engulfed by the coat. As with anything, try it on if you can.

White collars and cuffs
I read somewhere, that this was another reason for the emergence of (attached) white collars and cuffs on colored shirts. Apparently some (most?) shirt-makers would replace collars and cuffs for well less than the cost of a new shirt. What with washing and fading...
Silly, pettifogging question of the day . . .
Beautiful shoes. Just lovely.
I'm embarrassed to ask, but how do you polish spectators? All the more so if one is to wear them through the Boston winter? Just curious while I save up for mine.

Speaking of collars and Brooks Brothers (see "New Collars" thread), does anyone know roughly when it was that Brooks Brothers' "Polo Collar" -- better known as the button-down -- became pretty much the American standard for dress shirts?

I think Geo's got it about right . . .
at least in the US.
My understanding is that among traditional US hatters, a trilby is/was basically a fedora, but with less overall "mass" than the standard version. The crown is typically a little bit lower and more tapered, the brim is slightly...
So, hatters and historians . . .
Does the "wide ellipse" bash have a name? My Homburg has the same thing. Concept-wise, it works like a teardrop -- the crease is there for looks, but it accommodates a lot more head inside the hat than a conventional crease would.
For that matter, is there...
If it's just a matter of color, medium grey.
But in any case, I would wear the least obtrusive hat. Some kind of grey with a grey or black suit, or (hypothetically) navy with a navy blue suit.
In this context, a dorky/dweebie little hat that looks silly is as obtrusive as an oversize...
Thanks for shooting the linings too!
In fact, could I urge all of us Lounge Lizards to include photos of the linings when we strut our stuff. Sure, it's a bit like judging a book by its cover, but (for me, anyway) that flash of white silk and the endless variety of trade art (much of it...
FR Tripler (gratuitous history for those so inclined). . .
Nope, American.
For many years, the "better" men's stores in NY were clustered on Madison Ave. in the mid-40s, with Brooks Brothers at 44th St., Paul Stuart at 45th and Tripler's at 46th. JPress and Chipp (now gone) were around...
Maybe loook at the Akubra "Fedora" as well?
I asked Ron at Hats Direct for a side-by-side comparison of the Stylemaster and the Fedora. Subconsciously, I think I was looking for an open crown Stylemaster. Anyway, here's what he had to say:
I didn't follow up from that point. I...
Besdor, I'm impressed . . .
with your very honest commentary, given that Borsalino accounts for a lot of Bencraft's inventory (and revenues, I assume).
I'm even more impressed with the somewhat older stock Borsalino that I took home from your Williamsburgh store this past Tuesday. Lovely...
