    Akubra vs Borsalino Quality

Trying to absorb the accumulated wisdom of the Lounge archives occasionally leads to trouble distinguishing between these two concepts: 1) "Borsalinos from fifty years ago had far better quality felt and workmanship than modern Borsalinos" and 2) "All modern Borsalinos are awful hats not...

Hats in a pool room, Mulberry Street, New York, ca. 1943.

    An iconic Weegee photograph... http://www.slate.com/slideshows/arts/weegee-murder-is-my-business-at-icp.html#slide_9

    Akubra vs Borsalino Quality

One day there'll probably be a pair of those ongoing threads...one for "Stiff Hat Lovers United" and one for "Softies Only". For my part, I'm a Softie forever. Or is it a Cream Puff. I never can remember which.

What Hat Are You Wearing Today 1?

Today was my first time getting rain on the Tumwater hat TonyB made for me a couple months ago. I snapped a cell phone photo when I got back to my office but even running the Sharpness and Contrast way high you can't really make out the little water droplets. That's probably a good thing...

    Akubra vs Borsalino Quality

I have not owned Akubra but the two modern Borsalino hats I own are made of very, very light felt that is not stiff. About as light and un-stiff as any production hat you're likely to find. The Akubra hats, I'm told, are quite stiff by comparison and a bit heavier. I think if you really like a...

How Did Your Hat Come In Handy Today?

It was upper 30's with a 15-20mph breeze all day today, I was out and about a good bit and I have no hair. Yeah, my Tumwater came in real handy today. As a bonus, I received two "nice hat" complements from people I don't know. About 10 minutes apart. Must have had the angle just right or...

    The brown hat

I don't have a black overcoat but I frequently wear my chocolate brown Tumwater hat with light grey slacks and a jet-black long sleeved dress shirt. Looks very sharp, I think. The hat color warms up the rather monochrome outfit nicely and also makes the black look blacker, if that makes any sense.

I Like This Hat, But How Do You Just Start Wearing a Hat...

That's not a hat I'd care to wear but to most people a hat's a hat. 99% of the people you encounter on a daily basis will not even notice the difference in that Akubra vs. a 1950's Borsalino vs. a Vintage Silhouettes custom. It's just a big hat, if you going to wear one it matters only to...

What Hat Are You Wearing Today 1?

After seven days in row wearing my new Tumwater, grabbed the Borsalino this morning. A little bit of variety plus it just seemed to go better on a drizzly, dark day when I'm wearing sneakers and an old golf shirt.

What Hat Are You Wearing Today 1?

Nice coat, Dinerman. I would be covetous except for the fact in Nova Scotia you'll get far more use of it than I ever would!

    Post New Hats Here!

I think with that wide ribbon it looks great un-pinched. The front 3/4 view look especially well proportioned.

Well where else would The Devil work in this day and age?

What Hat Are You Wearing Today 1?

Well for what it's worth, I'm sure Indy can kick Flo's butt. He can probably hold his own against Medusa but The Devil...well I guess we'll just have to wait and see!

What Hat Are You Wearing Today 1?

Last night we watched an episodes of "Midsomer Murders" where the killer went around in a (black) bowler and (white) gloves. Even in brown I must say your photo gave me a chill for a moment.

Is that Wanderer as tall as it looks in that photo? My goodness, it looks to be over six inches tall even with the crease in it...

What is your favorite hat crease?

Yes. Yes they can. Check out the one on the left, brim is 2-1/16" or so.

What Hat Are You Wearing Today 1?

Once again, my new TonyB hat. I promise I won't post a picture of it everyday...forever. I always thought my Alessandria seemed pretty old-fashioned. But every time I see myself wearing the Tumwater it seems old-fashioned compared to the Borsalino. What era was the heyday of the Open...

Ask a question, get an answer

I've had one of my hats two years, my travel hat for a year-plus and just acquired my third hat this week. But I've never bothered to get a hat brush. With the arrival of a new hat I took a close look at the others and realized they are dusty and generally a little sad-looking. So I went out...

What Hat Are You Wearing Today 1?

Eric, I love a 2" brim as much as the next guy but if the worst thing anyone says about you is "Man, that Short Balding Guy sure wears a lot of Open Roads"... Well, for my part I think I could live with that! Everyone needs a (or two or ten) in that classic shape and trim.

    tonyb.....hatter and a gentleman

This has to be the best-dressed $8 styrofoam head in town, don't you think? My wife says every time she see that head with the hat she thinks "Now that's a head with attitude!"
