My avatar is a pic of my late father as a young man wearing a black fedora, and looking very snazzy in it.
So, while I don't have a black fedora at this point, I'm planning to start a family tradition and get one.
Is Paris Burning?
Great 1966 film based on a great (non-fiction) book. Should be required reading for anyone who thinks the French were cowards during WW2.
The film is available on DVD, though you might have to look around for it.
You might get a better result from asking Akubra directly. Simply being Australian doesn't guarantee any knowledge about Akubras - or any taste: it's rare to see anyone wearing any hat other than a baseball cap here, just like the US. And, without exaggeration, the occasional Akubra you do see...
Let me think about that...
2 Russian Ushankas, one old and retired, one new.
1 Leather wide brimmed rain hat.
1 Cotton sun hat with mosquito netting.
1 fur felt fedora, though I intend to get more...
1 bowler hat.
1 straw fedora, though I intend to get a wider-brimmed straw pretty soon.

It's not a rumour, it's basic science.
Darker colours absorb more light, lighter colours reflect it. The energy in absorbed light is converted to heat, therefore a light coloured hat is cooler than a dark coloured hat.
Light-coloured clothing in sunny weather isn't a meaningless...
My face hair is pretty similar to Lefty's "Kangaroo". So I hit "Other" meaning mo + goatee.
When I got together with my sweetie, I asked her if it bothered her and offered to go clean shaven. She said "NOOOOOOO!" So clearly not all women disapprove of facial hair.
B! Wear linen cap: natural colour, smooth leather sweatband ($2 extra). Posted a close-up over in the New Hats thread, here's the portrait shot:
One of these days I'll post a shot of me well-dressed and neatly-shaved...
B! Wear linen cap. It's getting sunnier on this side of the globe.
Natural linen, with a smooth leather sweatband ($2 extra).
Edit: This is the close up, I've posted a portrait shot over in the Cap Faction thread.
Bushman? Good-looking hat, but I'm wondering why I can't find it on the Akubra website. Does it have a different name here in Australia? The only references on a Google search seem to be US-based sites, and I can't match it visually to anything on Akubra's product pages.
I disagree - I'd say his wrinkles come from sun damage, not drug abuse. I've seen both up close, and from my observations, I'd say tanning is far worse for your skin than any amount of drug abuse.
I'm quite a fan of Richards, and my impression is that "drug ravaged Keith" is far more of a...
I'm not a big fan of boaters - to me they're inextricably linked with private school kids - but this one is different. I'd wear that for sure, the snap brim makes all the difference. And the taller, slightly tapered crown... it's a Boatora!
Great hat, anyway, and it looks great on you.
No. Customs excise/duties/taxes are imposed at the receiving end. Australia has no say over what your gov't charges you to import something, and we don't get a cent of it.
But that's what customs duty etc is: what your gov't charges you to import something. Nothing to do with the seller or...
You're correct that imports under AU$1000 are duty/tax free, so no-one ever has to "mark as gift" or undervalue anything below that price for shipment to Australia. (Shipping is included in the cutoff, so something that cost $999 + $2 postage will put you over the threshold.)
The rules are...
Several weeks ago I got a Hanna 8-piece cap in brown herringbone tweed. I've been wearing it a lot, it's had a lot of compliments, and I completely love it, so much so that I'm strongly considering getting the same cap in both the grey and the green, for a complete set.
It's not easy to...
I have but one Akubra, though I expect to get more in the future.
Akubra is (and will hopefully remain) the only manufacturer of Australian Army slouch hats, so I'm 100% certain that there have been many occasions where there have been thousands of people all wearing Akubras at once.
I'm...
Thanks for the comments, folks. I'm very impressed with the quality of this Hanna Hat, and I can highly recommend Hanna to anyone who may be considering buying from them.
The colour doesn't really come across well in photos, in person mine has a kind of tweedy woollen glow about it. I know...
I'm in the cap faction now, too.
Well, I was already qualified with a cheap but nice corduroy flat cap that I wore pretty often, but that's just been superseded by my new 8-panel newsboy in brown herringbone tweed from Hanna Hats.
Got it yesterday, wore it last night while out to dinner with...
I've always liked hats, though they've only become an everyday item in recent years.
I got sick of being sunburned when I was a kid, so I started wearing straw or cotton hats during summer when I was a teenager. At that time (1980s) in Australia they started taking skin cancer more...
