I've never made up any Vogue or similar Big 4 re-issues, but I have used Past Patterns, EvaDress, VFL, and.. Wearing History! That's Lauren's repro company. :) I also have a few patterns from VPLL but haven't had the chance to sew them up yet.
Some times I've had little frustrations with...
Lizzie - I used to be really scared of driving and didn't get my license until this year (I'm 20). Sewing actually helped a lot for the reasons you stated, although I don't know how to drive stick. Learning how to control one foot pedal helped me with others. :D
I still have hair-pulling...
Last year in April or May I started taking classes at JoAnn's. We made an apron first, and then a pair of elastic waist shorts (hideous) and a top. Next I made a skirt or two and jumped into vintage patterns. After that if I ever needed help I'd check the internet or just keep trying something...
Hats! Only one has a tag (the first) which reads "Original Caroline". I googled that and got pictures of hats claiming to be from the 40s-60s.
This one's like a beret, you can see on the right side of this photo where the flat ridge-y part is, like the side that sticks up?
Annie, ultimately comparing yourself to people will do no good. I see girls all the time wishing they had some "perfect body" in a magazine when THOSE people in the magazine don't even that body, because it's airbrushed.
Ultimately your body is the only one you have and you should take care...
I thought I'd post a picture of my husband in his newly acquired flight suit because I don't think I've ever shared a photo of him:
He's a ham, there are a hundred other photos like this, haha.
30s-50s fashion gives you many opportunities to balance out a pear shape. Make sure there is good fit in your waist and put some attention up top - interesting neckline or collar, puffy sleeves or 40s shoulder pads.
I know it wasn't really around then, but would rayon work for a 30s skirt? So far I've used cotton and linen (100%) to make a few basic skirts and I'm not really happy with either of the results. They're alright but I want more smooth soft drapeyness and the linen skirt wrinkles terribly. As you...
palespider, I have two entries on my blog about fabric shopping for the 30s and 40s that go a little in to what fabrics would have been used, but I also talk about popular motifs, colors, etc. Link in my sig!
Laura - I use a product from Lush called grease lightening on developing pimples and I love it! It really helps to prevent them or at least shorten their life span.
I think you'll be able to best guess a garment's era or an even smaller time frame of when it could have been made by researching the eras you're interested in more thoroughly. Like Joie said, nylon zippers may not have originally been in 30s dresses but what if someone replaced the original...
