I can suggest the David Morgan Adventurer which is a lot like the Fed IV. Give it the cattleman's crease like the hat in my avatar, and keep the brim down rather than up. That'll make it less like an Indy hat, but also not a cowboy hat.
There are more pictures of this crease in the Art...
I travel a lot. Best to give the hat its own bin. I also put it in the overhead after everyone is on board and all the luggage is stored. There's usually someone who has a low bag in the overhead, or I put it under the seat in front of me.
Art Fawcett dress weight black cherry is in my avatar. I found it to be very versatile, though it can be considered flamboyant. If the black cherry is blacker like the lightweight Art Fawcett, it should be black with a flair which I imagine would be very versatile.
From an economics standpoint this shouldn't make a difference. It costs Optimo more than VS to produce a hat of the same quality so he charges more. Is that a "good deal" or a good value to the end consumer? He evidently can do that because there is a perception that what Optimo produces is...
Certainly the quality of both hatters is excellent. But the thread is about which is a "better deal." Optimo goes for a 30% to 60% premium for a 100% beaver hat body. The question is whether that premium is worth the difference in quality and service. That is subjective. In an "efficient"...
I don't think you can make that generalization. I'm not sure, but I doubt, that Optimo takes returns on custom hats unless there are defects. You'll also notice that the VS thread has many more entries here than Optimos. That may mean something too, but it may just mean more FL members buy VS...
I'm a little confused. Did you resew this strengthed sweat to the hat or did you glue it? I have an old 20s fedora and the sweat is in perfect condition except most of the stitches have popped. The original sweat is so distinctive I haven't had the heart to have it replaced since I was told...
I have an Optimo and several VS and I find the quality to be similar. But Art will make just about anything you want. His standard styles tend to the early 20th Century but if you want a Rorsache hat copied from Watchman with its stingy brim and low crown or any other style, he'll do it...
I know. I have this great new hat (which I ordered to take advantage of Art's discount) but it's probably going to be 4 or 5 months before I can wear it.
Exactly! I wanted a more formal version of this hat. While the black cherry looked good with a suit it was a little forward for many people, so I thought a darker version would look less flamboyant. Midnight was good because its a little more fun than black but still formal.
New midnight blue "Stendahl" has arrived. The black cherry version is in my avatar. This hat is copied from a picture of an LA art dealer from the late 20s or early 30s and was often worn by the artsy, bohemian crowd. It's basically like a cowboy hat with a floppy brim. I've found it to be...
