Works well for me. I have a 7" long face (from brim to chin). Since my head is 6.75" wide (according to my VS customs) that implies a brim width of about 2 3/8" - 2 1/2" and a crown height of about 4.5". Many of my hats have dimensions close to that if I use crown height to the front crease.
As someone with a wider face, I've found that higher crowns (at least 4.5") and wider brims (2.25" minimum) work best. The crown is actually more important than the brim. But if I wear one of the current low crown stingy brim hats that are popular with hipsters, I look like Oliver Hardy, if...
