I got something, but is it special? Aero A-2

Hello Forum,

This is my first post here, after spending quite some time here in the past weeks to gather information, mainly about leather jackets.

So, and now my first post. Reason for it is, that I bought something from Japan that peaked my interest. It’s an Aero A-2 leather jacket, contract N39-1410p. I know that this fantasy made up contract is one of the contracts that aero used for its first leather jackets produced in the 80s and 90s. The thing is, the leather jackets looks almost like new. The condition is too good to be true for this age. I sent aero some pictures of the jacket and they confirmed that it’s real. Unfortunately, there is no tag in the pocket, therefore I can not verify the exact year. My question is, what do you think about the jacket? Is it special? Too special to wear? I’m not a collector, therefore I’m not interested in having a rare A-2. In that case I would rather sell it and get a new one.

Note, there is some slight damage. A small hole in the rib on the backside and a deep groove in the leather. I think the leather groove was there from factory because it’s dyed through. And it’s not a hole, but maybe something that should have been mentioned.

Cheers

Julian

This is not a collectable, sorry to disappoint but you did not stumble across a short-cut to riches. Pre-owned Aeros sell for a fraction of their new price and A-2s are a very specific Market; most people dont care for them and most of those who do, care for historical accuracy. I would be very surprised if anyone paid significantly more than 350-400 USD for this.

I didn’t dream of a short cut to riches, at least not by selling this jacket :D
Anyhow it fits well, so I’ll patch up the small hole and wear it.
I just found it super interesting that it’s in this great condition for its age. Seems like basically unworn.

Can somebody date it?

The small hole in the knitting can be easily fixed by carefully applying some clear fabric glue, sparingly, around the edges of the hole, and then pressing the sides of the hole together till the glue sets. You may find it useful to use a permanent furniture marker of appropriate color to disguise the repair, but hopefully not.

You can also darn the hole with appropriate thread. Your call.

Great jacket. If it fits well, put it on and wear it with pleasure. The hole in the can be left as it is.

That’s the spirit. Wear and enjoy! You found a treasure, just not in profane money value as @jacketjunkie rightly points out.

But beware…secondhand A-2s are a gateway drug ;) Before you know it, you will have a closet full of cross zips and cafe racers. Enjoy! It is a fun hobby. Second hand jackets are a good way to explore what you like (and what you don’t) without spending a fortune.

Welcome and great A-2. My advice is to not get addicted, you start with a used A-2, then a few brand new Lost Worlds and your better half threatening you with divorce if another *******g jacket shows up at the house….
Thank you for your words, but it may already be too late. I got some more jackets incoming. You might see me around here more often

Suggest, with all respect, that that hole won't fix itself, but only grow larger over time. Fixing it now, with a tiny dab of glue, will be a permanent fix.

I will fix it or stop it from getting worse.
I have not yet decided how to fix it, the knitting is in great condition besides the hole, so I don’t think I have to replace it anytime soon. I will probably search for a tutorial on how to stitch it back together and try it.
